I get most of my stuff via internet, so shopping isn't an issue, really, but you even have options for that. There is a fair-sized Animas Valley Mall, most of the chains, 2 SuperWalmarts and a Sam's Club.

There are also two great skiing areas not far away that nearly always have reliable snow, unlike here in Southern NM.

There are downsides, too, so it's not all rosy, but no place ever is.

Of course you know we want the unvarnished truth when you finally arrive and come up for air, LOL!
Yes I'm looking forward to swimming in winter! The big one looks cool with all the water slides and everything- I know my kiddies were impressed.

I'm glad you said the restaurants were good...I appreciate a good meal at a restaurant on occasion, and I read some sort of negative posts on chowhound about Farmington eats- well, not really negative, but just that there isn't much there. We'll see.

Internet shopping doesn't bother me either- neither does making a pilgrimage to Albuquerque or Santa Fe or Phoenix for that matter- but I have in-laws there, so kills two birds sort of thing.

I'm into the skiing- though I have mainly been doing nordic so I hope there's some of that.

Yes, I will definitely give my report once I'm there. Kindof looking forward to the trek out there too. Always love a good road trip!

Have a GREAT trip.....it's back on my list. Although Farmington can't touch the Tularosa basin as far as scenery and mountains-in-your-face type thing, the San Juans are neat, just a lot farther away than the Sacramentos are here.

The only thing that would make Alamogordo 100% perfect for me would be good snow at Cloudcroft and Ski Apache but I'm beginning to believe that it's going to be very seldom down here. I'm really disappointed as far as that goes, but really do love the area otherwise. We're just too far south.

I am not 100% sure, but I THINK that both Purgatory (Durango Mountain Resort) and Wolf Creek may have provisions for X-country skiing.

I thought to double check when I got home....yep, Purgatory does have it, and so does Wolf Creek...I'd bet that Telluride does, too. It's another area in the vicinity that is about 140 miles, a little bit farther than the other two.

My heart is breaking. All that wonderful snow, and it's over 400 miles away.

that's something i really miss. i've lived in NM, TX [lubbock and galveston], OK, and IN before moving to the DC area. in every one of those areas, you could count on someone stopping to help if you had car trouble [well, in the daylight hours, at least]. yeah, you might have to wait half an hour sometimes, but at least someone would stop and offer to help.
here, you'll be waiting until a cop happens to come by

I have been in Farmington for 19 years since I retired from the NAVY and I wouldn't live anywhere else. We have problems, but nothing like DC, LA,SD or Albq. It's economy is mostly oil field . All I can sy is Welcome and enjoy the L.O.E.

WARNING : We do have a slower life style than your probably used to...

I am sure Farmington is fine just want some insight from all of you out there that know, like acess to gyms, sports clubs, shopping mainly family activites for a young family. I looked online and saw that Durango was 50.55 miles away. I am not a brain surgeon, but the income will be just fine
I was born in Baltimore, and our parents took us to DC frequently, mostly for the Smithsonian. Obviously, there will be nothing on that scale in Farmington. But there are many attractions in and around--"The Phil" in Shiprock advertises concerts, and we plan to go to one at the Civic Center in a couple of weeks. The Aquatic Center is very nice (We took students there on a field trip from Chinle, AZ) and there are gyms, parks, museums, and great shopping (Also casinos nearby, if that interests you). If you want the B/W corridor, you won't find it here, but there will be things for your family to do. (We are literally just moving in now, but we were willing to drive 150 miles each way to visit during the last school year.)
Good luck in your move!

Default Farmington area info request

Hi, my wife, mother in law, and I are looking at relocating to the Farmington area and we were looking for information. We currently live in North Carolina after moving from New Jersey with a company that had relocated here. I was laid off in February, and the job market/ unemployment rate here is terrible. After looking up and down the east coast with no luck, we have looked toward NM as a place we would like to live at. We have a lot of questions, which we are trying to get answers for before moving, as we do not have the option of flying out to check out the area first.

1- We are looking for a 2 bedroom apartment (preferably) that will accept pets. Are there any recommended realtors that we should contact that will not place us in a bad neighborhood? Finding a realtor that will return our emails from 1900 miles away has been a problem for us. What is generally needed for a deposit- one month, 1 1/2 months, two months rent?

2- We have two dogs, both are Chinese Crested Hairless. We have already read about the problems of Hanta virus and such. Is there anything we should know or keep an eye out for?

3- What utility companies are used in the area? In NJ there were two large companies that served specific areas, but down here in NC we have gotten stuck using the cities own utility company (due to the apartment we live in). Looking on Craigslist we have seen many apartments rents include utilities- is that generally the norm in the area? What sort of deposit is needed? Sort of related, what is the general view by renters on using satellite service, such as DirecTV? Do different companies provide electric, water (both drinking and sewer), gas, and trash collection?

4- We’ve seen also on these forums that the west and south areas of town are not recommended. Are there any areas in town that are, or any areas outside of town recommended?

5- What is the tax situation like? In NJ we had just federal and state taxes (which the state taxes were among the highest in the nation). Here in NC, we have federal, state, county, and city taxes to deal with. We were lead to believe by the company I moved here for that it was cheaper to live here than NJ, which we have found to be untrue unless you are a homeowner (property taxes in NJ are sky high). Among other things that we do not like are the fact that there is a yearly county tax on your vehicle that for us this year is $150 (on top of paying for registration and inspections)

6- Also, as far as the state DMV service- what do we need to know? In NJ inspections were yearly and free, down here they are yearly and we have to pay for them. Will we need to retake our driving test? I lived in Florida for a short time, and only needed to fill out a form and show my NJ license to get a Florida one (which was very cool). When moving back to NJ and then down here we had to retake the written (well, computer) test.

7- Are there any senior activities in the area, such as bus tours, bingo, etc.? My mother in law is currently 83, so we would like to know if there are things for her to do in the area (there is nothing in our area). Is there any form of mass transit, as we only have one vehicle? Are there nice local parks and trails which would be ok for her to go to? Are there any nearby casino’s she could go to? We had ordered the NM Vacation Guide and when she looked through it she got all excited when she saw something about slot machines. I laughed and said to my wife “Screw the scenery, there’s gambling!”

8- Snowfall- how much, how often, and how long does it stick around for? Living in NJ has really given me a “distaste” (to put it mildly) for snow. There is snow in NC, but they have no snow removal equipment here and the people do not know how to drive in it, so when it snows here it is interesting to say the least.

9- Finally, what kinds of spiders are there out there? Yes, spiders. I am extremely arachnophobic, and since moving south from NJ we have found a great variety of spiders in this area. Big huge monsters, brown recluses, black widows, you name it. How prevalent are spiders, and how deadly are they in NM?

I appreciate any help that we can get with the above questions. We are pretty much looking to move out west blind, as there are no opportunities in the area here, and moving back to NJ is out of the question. My wife and I both do not like to live in crowded areas, such as cities, so NM with it's extremely low population density looks great to us. If there are any other towns in NM with decent job's nearby, feel free to tell us!

Farmington is just on the outskirts of the Navajo Rez and as such has its own set of problems. One being alcoholism, crime and high unemployment. I don't suppose you've researched this? //www.city-data.com/city/Farmin...ew-Mexico.html
