I have two questions about the highways in New Mexico.
My first question is: Will New Mexico eventually be installing signs in the new Clearview typeface? As far as I know, the typeface isn't yet approved for use in New Mexico. Many other states have adopted the typeface for new highway signs, and New Mexico seems to be behind the curve, still using the old Highway Gothic font.
Also, could New Mexico raise their state speed limit to 80 mph? There are two states in the U.S. which have some 80 mph highways (Texas and Utah). I think some highway stretches in New Mexico that can use an 80 mph speed limit include I-25 between Las Cruces and Soccoro as well as between Las Vegas and Raton, and I-40 between Albuquerque (from Unser exit) and Grants.
I think most states HAVEN'T converted to clearview. I've driven recently in California, Arizona, El Paso TX, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The only place I've seen conversion is in PA, and that wasn't even on all of the roads.
As for the speed limits, you could easily make the case it should be "reasonable and prudent" like Montana was before 1996, in most of the non-urban interstates, as well as US 70 through the Missile Range, and US 285 between Vaughn and Roswell. 80 mph seems like slow motion driving between ABQ and Las Cruces. But I don't anticipate anything over 80 mph for any of these places.
Some excellent points got brought up. More important than raising the maximum speed limit is imposing a higher minimum speed limit and enforcing it.
I'd like nothing more than the state to raise revenue by busting people for doing 55mph up La Bajada in the fast lane and issuing them $100 citations for it. Who's with me?

I agree completely. As Mortimer says: divergence of speed kills. The 55 mph driver is one of those who is driving slowly and inattentively, by doing so in the left lane.
I think Clearview looks horrid, and I'm happy we're sticking with the Highway Gothic.
As far as 80mph+, AMEN. Not for I-40 between Grants & Albuquerque, though.. too many hills for it to be safe.
Actually, I think parts of this stretch would be perfect for 80 mph, as it is one of a few stretches of highway in New Mexico that has a MINIMUM (65 mph) speed limit. Probably not the entire length between Albuquerque and Grants, but perhaps the section with the 65 mph minimum speed limit can have its maximum speed limit raised to 80 mph.

Mike, you just traveled that way not too long ago as i thought that it's already 75 MPH from Cruces to ABQ? and no matter what the limit is many always go 5 miles or more over it so going 80 MPH with the exception around T or C (state cops) probably is the norm anyway on I-25??
