Has anyone seen resources for animals abandoned because of the storm? I found a dog in dire need of care and would like to get it help without bringing it to a shelter.

This is in Nassau County, but, if you can make it out there, saw this post on Facebook:
Mitchell field which is in east garden city (by the long island children's museum) ... A 10,000 square foot shelter is being provided for displaced animals due to sandy .. It is being run by north shore animal league

I'm sure it is, but this dog hasn't been taken care of in a long time. It's really skinny. I'm going to have it scanned for a chip. It's a pure breed Cocker Spaniel so it probably has one.

a nyc # was given on ch.7 news - I think it's for Animal Care and Control
the # given was 347-573-1561
you gonna keep it? I was a dog walker for a few months in my early 20's for a cocker spaniel. super cute even though I'm not a dog person

Reason: stating the source - ch.7 "eyewitness news" (local nyc station of ABC)

I'm glad you found him/her. If there's one thing that really upsets me, it's abandoned or lost animals. Please post any updates!
I walked through lower Manhattan at around 5-6 am today. I figured power would be up by late today, and I wanted to get pictures (no, not for my own pleasure, but because I need to learn how to photograph without lights). Maybe this sounds weird, but Manhattan in the pitch black is, for lack of a better term, amazing. Really. It was kind of 'Resident Evil' at some points, but strangely beautiful. I've been in complete darkness outside before, but the huge buildings in the city REALLY engulf you in blackness. When I first stepped off the bus, my eyes hadn't adjusted and I ate concrete (and cracked my phone screen) but it was well worth it. Glad power is starting to get turned on for everyone, although if it was still out, I'd probably be there again in a couple hours

Hopefully you got to see stars in the sky before daylight which is usually hard to see when the power is working.
According to NBC, the American Red Cross is asking for blood donations as there is a shortage in our area.
