I want to make one more point here. I think a comparison between Bedford Park and Inwood makes more sense. As I see it, these neighborhoods are similar demographicly and about the same travel time to midtown. Yet rents and purchase prices are higher in Inwood. Is it the NYC (Manhattan) zipcode that adds the premium or is the QOL really better in inwoood compared to Bedford Park?
Yes, they're very similar. The buildings, hills, open space trees. I don't know how much a house goes for in Inwood these days. When we left, houses were already more than $1 million (9 years ago). Bedford Park has more houses in general. I guess the houses in Bedford Park were built in the late 1800s or early 1900s, and then the apartment buildings in both areas were built at the same time (the 20s). Transportation is better in Bedford Park, but Inwood has way more restaurants. We go back to visit sometimes and always stop at the Pipers Kilt (the best onion rings in the whole city IMO).
By the way, does anyone know current rental prices for apartments in Bedford Park?

Studios 850 or 900 ?1 br's 1,000 to 1,200 ? 2 br's 1,400 ? Maybe more ,not sure.
Wow,just found this 1 br on The Concourse for 1,450 ! Rents are really getting out of control. When I was looking to buy 4 years ago,1 br apartments in this building rented for 950/mo.Pretty sure it's 3201 Grand Concourse, judging by the pink hallways and the garden in back of the building.I thought about buying an apartment there. The 1 br's were selling for about $125,000 then.Mortgage and maintenance combined would have been around 1,000/ or 1100/mo and now renting for 1,450 ? Not bad ! And this apartment doesn't even have a balcony, which a lot of apartments @ 3201 do.
Thanks Bluedog. I had done a quick search and was kind of surprised at the prices. I thought maybe the particular listings I looked at were higher than average, but...
That building is asking $1,450 for a one bedroom here and they don't even show a photo of the interior, just the pink hallway? Crazy.
Edit: oops - scrolling shows the interior. My bad.

Did a little more digging and found this other 1 br in the building for sale for 145,000.I wanted to see if the sale prices went up since the crash. It has good interior shots to see what the 1 br's look like.

That's a beautiful apartment. Love the layout and the floors. My old apartment had a HUGE L shaped LR, which had been converted into a study before I moved in. It's nice to see that the prices have still held up over the years.

That building and it's sister building next door went Coop in the 80's. They were always kept up. A lot of Dr's offices in that building. I believe 3201 is the one with the very bright balcony colors. The one across the street white brick one is also in decent shape.

Yeah, those are the bldgs I remember seeing back in the day. I went to a dr. there. Those (and several of the other co ops buildings along Moshulu Pkwy) are what I remember when I think of the area. And I definitely remember that bright colored balcony bldg. too!
When I see pics like the ones bluedog posts, it makes me all nostalgic!
