I agree that East Harlem is not the best...I think it may hold the record for the highest concentration of housing projects in the city? Not sure about that though. So with that comes all the dummies that do stupid things...the area IS improving but the high concentration of housing projects will slow the process greatly.

Lol...you will be 130 before East Harlem looks like cobble hill. But you will be 40 when East Harlem looks like Mott Haven.

seriously tho, there really isnt a difference between east harlem and mott haven right now. if anything, they will both improve at the same pace, with east harlem at a slighter edge only because its in manahttan. but when the 2nd avenue subway line finally gets completed, thats when east harlem will surge.

Default Former Nyc Tenant

I lived in washington heights before, on bennett ave. It was alright I felt pretty safe. Although one time some guy was blowing kisses at me from behind. My friend Jonathan and David lived in Spanish harlem for a very short time, they did not like it. They were always called 'maricone'... etc when they walked outside. I thought Spanish Harlem was cool for gay people especially so, in fact I read an article saying so a few years ago.
As far as East New York (depicted in the Death Wish films as a horrid place of atrocities) I was told that it is no way suitable for a white person to inhabit. And that if I went in there naked with my ass stuck out I would soon get gangbanged in an alley. I was told that Astoria is the best place to live in NY?

I teach in the south Bronx and take the M60 to East Harlem from Astoria (where I live). I pass through E.Harlem everyday when I transfer to the 4 train, on 125th st. No one ever bothers me there or in the south Bronx. I guess because 125th is really busy and no one notices. I'm a 23 y/o skinny white female btw.

But then again...last summer I was going all around Harlem hand-delivering resumes to schools looking for a teaching job. I think I was around 118th st & Park ave; that was a pretty bad area and I actually didn't feel that safe. That was the only time I didn't feel safe in any of the areas I went to to hand-deliver resumes (and I went to almost every bad neighborhood in the city; you name it and I was probably there).
