My husband and I have lived in LA all of our lives, and have been thinking of a move to the NYC area. We have 2 kids, aged 10 and 7, one of whom is a special needs child. This is something that wouldn't be happening for a year or two, so we can get ourselves in a better financial position first. But I wanted to start researching neighborhoods now, so when the time comes, I know just where to go and what to do. We are just middle class folks, not wealthy... it seems from what I've seen that Queens might be our best bet for decent rent (under $3000) and good schools. We also want ethnic diversity, something we prize in our current neighborhood of Eagle Rock in Northeast LA. Any suggestions are welcomed and appreciated! Also, any tips on others who may have made the same move on how they adjusted to the weather? Thanks again!
As far as Queens you're on the right track, it has an abundance of places under $3000 and it is the most diverse county in the United States and has one of the most diverse zipcodes in the world. Check out Flushing,Astoria, Kew Gardens, Rego Park, Sunnyside, there's too many to name, the only places really to stay away from are Corona, Jamaica (esp. southside) and the Rockaways. However shopping on Jamaica ave is great, the commute makes it just as undesirable as the bad schools there, same thing for the Rockaways. Be sure to select an area that is not too far from a subway line.
A couple of the places I've been checking out are Bayside and Forest Hills. It's tough to really know until you've been to a place, but these days you can get so much info online.
