There is a synagogue on Church Avenue and Ocean Parkway called Flatbush Jewish Center.
Basically, any part of the Jewish neighborhood East of Borough Park is "Flatbush".
I saw that too! That's interesting since within the Jewish version of Flatbush, there are such widely varying neighborhoods. Everything from Kensington, to Western Flatbush, to Eastern Flatbush, to Midwood.

Yes, East Flatbush is "Flatbush" too.
The Jewish community just calls the whole Jewish neighborhood/s "Flatbush".
Really?
We have older West Indian black family friends who lived in PLG and always called it Prospect Lefferts Gardens.
Older might have something to do with it!
I’m 27 and people my age who live in the community definitely say Flatbush!
When I was in high school there was actually a shirt created for Flatbush people. The shirt was black or white with the names of streets on it. Streets in PLG like Winthrop, Hawthorne, Lincoln, Beekman were included on the shirt!
Also I grew up with Miss Former Haiti who lives in Winthrop and Nostrand. Since knowing them since I was a baby they always repped Crown Heights. Similar to my close friend who lived on Sterling St and Nostrand.
PLG felt like a term used moreso on Bedford and Rogers. But necessarily the case for those who lived on Flatbush ave and Nostrand!
Actually there are many people who don’t even know that Midwood exist. I have met a number of people who aren’t familiar with Midwood call it Flatbush or assume it’s borough park. My old choir director (RIP) use to always joke and say I live in Bensonhurst even though he lived on Albany Ave and Ave H!

Even Crown Heights?

Do you think it's because Flatbush is "cooler", or because PLG has too many syllables in it to be catchy?
I also noticed that people in much of the Bronx (pretty much everywhere besides the white neighborhoods with some exceptions) don't use neighborhood names at all, or they'll make up neighborhoods based on street names.

Yep, my AA coworker in Bushwick doesn't even know what Kensington and Midwood are. Nor does he seem to be familiar with any of the neighborhoods in South Brooklyn besides Coney Island. And I tell people all the time I used to live in Kensington, and I have to specify that it's the neighborhood to the West of Flatbush.

Yup you are learning lol
A lot of black folks are oblivious to southern Brooklyn except for Coney Island and the West Indian woman who work as care takers in those areas lol
But I’ll say because of gentrification PLG is definitely used much more now!
That is a legit name though, right? As opposed to Ditmas Park
Similarly, I predict people will start using "Mott Haven" more when it gentrified, even though that name is completely valid and has been around for a long time. I know a girl who lived in Mott Haven her entire life and she didn't even seem to know what Mott Haven is! I wonder why The Bronx lacks the neighborhood pride that Brooklyn has.

I guess it makes sense since most of those neighborhoods don't have a large black population. In Kensington today I saw more black people than I usually do, I wonder if it's a total coincidence or if more have been moving to the neighborhood.
