With a bird about to crash, I would be really worried about the blades slicing into me. I would have unbuckled a second after impact and after the rotor stops or the blades break apart that's when I would ditch. But the water could have killed anyone within minutes because of hypothermia. I'm sure the people on board were expecting/hoping the pilot to pull up/recover but he never did. The chopper even had inflatable pontoons that apparently never deployed.

Lawsuits are a-comin'

ya think now maybe our mayor and all the other idiots in office will finally get the message and ban these tourist helicopters for once and all.

it doesnt take a rocket scientist to see all the negatives of them flying around our city.

how many more people have to die before the mayor finally wakes up???????

Mayor?? Maybe he can impose a 25 MPH speed ban on those too.

One of the victims was a fire fighter from Dallas. Of all people I would think he would know how to get out of this situation, cut lose from the belts and leave the shell. But no. Very weird.

Where did you read this account of the pilot's intentions? I think you are making angry assumptions.

Did you stay at a holiday inn last night?

Why stop with that plan? You could have unbuckled early, slid down to the chopper skids and flapped your arms bringing everyone to safety.

You don't need to be a brain surgeon to plan to ditch a failing aircraft with no doors. In any high risk situation you need to be aware of all your options. Panic is a very dangerous emotion

I heard on the NBC New York this afternoon, that the pilot said that it perhaps a bag of one of the passengers might have accidentally touched/pushed/cut off the/a fuel line switch?!

He doesn't have the authority. The chopper came from NJ, and the federal government controls airspace.

Also this wasn't a tourist chopper. It was a professional photo shoot.

Helicopters (and planes) should have automatic inflatable airbags. Even boats and ships too. Will keep the craft afloat whenever there’s any kind of accident.
