Helicopters (and planes) should have automatic inflatable airbags. Even boats and ships too. Will keep the craft afloat whenever there’s any kind of accident.
I heard on the NBC New York this afternoon, that the pilot said that it perhaps a bag of one of the passengers might have accidentally touched/pushed/cut off the/a fuel line switch?!
Fake story, the lever is right behind the pilot's seat in the cockpit is to stop the propeller in an emergency. It is more likely he accidentally pulled it. Since nobody survived he can make up any story.
Of the last 25 yrs, nobody has ever made that kind of mistake of pulling the fuel line.
Go look at the video of where the lever was. He knew what was gonna happen and didn't warn others while he unbuckled quickly and jumped and held on to a floatation device while the others sank to the bottom.

Apparently the only way to unbuckle yourself is to use a knife to cut the harness.
in this copter. That's the story I was reading this morning.
There's possibly a more stupid way to have an emergency release procedure - but not many. This is why there is tort law. The helicopter manufacturer's need to be sued so in the future they install a good system for emergency release. Honestly - issuing everyone with knives?

Yes, I too was wondering about that. How could cutting the harness be the only way to free oneself in an emergency be acceptable?!
Problems that will shut down and bankrupt the company and perhaps its insurer as well:
1. Preposterous fuel line shut off
2. impossibility of having to cut out of a harness
3. Mal-deployment of inflatable pontoons meant to keep the copter upright in water.
This will be one of the largest wrongful death settlements in history. I would not be surprised if the amount exceeds a $billion.
