And for what it is worth, NYC still has about 200,000 "essential" workers moving around daily spreading it with very little change to our normal work routines. Our "leaders" are idiotic.
...but they have always been, and many on this board have done nothing but belittle those of us who've pointed this out regularly on other issues, hoping the city might wake up before we were stuck with these idiots in a crisis.
Everyone out in public should be required to wear a mask, N95, a cheap but effective barrier between yourself and the next person breathing, coughing, sneezing, or their spittle landing in the air, on, or near you. Actually, those should be passed out in public. That's why China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan did once they acknowledged the outbreak in their country. Look at how things have turned around for them. Especially Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan.
It looks foolish for the US to have people isolating, keep their hands clean, away from their face, coughing into elbow or tissue but yet NOT require them to wear protective masks which would basically serve the purpose of ensuring all of those precautions are adhered to by people and prevent them from catching this contagious flu-pneumonia.
And before someone pipes up "we don't have enough, we have to save them for healthcare workers", I don't want to hear it. There are companies in this country which usually construct uniforms, household textiles (pillows, kitchen towels, bath towels, face towels, etc. and the like) which could be contracted in this "war against COVID-19" to make these masks. If even a few of these companies were working at maximum output over the next 7 days they could put out enough protective masks for every American that needs to go out publicly. The idiocy is why isn't our govt mandating masks be worn in public throughout this pandemic?
Upstate Counties Urge New York City Residents to Stay Away
Those are not the values that we have," County Executive Pat Ryan said Monday afternoon. He was reacting to recent calls by officials in Greene, Delaware and Sullivan counties for out-of-towners, especially from the hard-hit New York City area, to not come upstate during the outbreak.
"Especially in a moment of challenging crisis, we're supposed to all be in this together," Ryan said at Ulster County first mobile testing site, in a parking lot at TechCity in the town of Ulster. "It shouldn't matter what your ZIP code is or where you are coming from. If you need help, we're gonna help you. That's what Ulster County is. That's what our community is."
Mind you the Wuhan virus spreaded during Chinese new years. This is why the outbreak was never contained.
Chinese New Year was Jan. 25 - Feb. 8, 2020. Consider that COVID-19's incubation period 2-14 days generally but of course there are exceptions. That means those persons left China and returned back to their current homes coming in contact with people for two weeks, at least, before the host carrier might have start coughing or feeling feverish. They still wouldn't had known they had a contagious flu-pneumonia (COVID-19) until the information was publicized nationally.
By late Feb. 2020, they'd already passed the virus on to others. The lock down would have had to happened before they returned from China, back in early Feb. But we didn't know then what we know now so the shutdown didn't happen then in the US. Fast forward to current day, in NYC the shutdown is a feel good measure but it's too late because either you've been exposed to it or not, Either you've caught it or not. Either you're asymptomatic or not. Either your body can fight off this illness or not. I'm not being fatalistic but realistic. Sometimes you have to accept that life is not always in our control. During those times, we just have to roll with the punches until better days come. And it will in time. Change is the one constant in life.

Well said. This event should be humbling for many. The impact is real, the danger is real. We were supposed to be looking forward to the nice weather, increased outings and entertainment while enjoying a strong economy. The good times were about to roll.
And in a short period of time we have hit with a haymaker of a crisis that is bigger then all of us. We will recover, we are a hardy bunch us humans. The toll will be harsh and we should forever be reminded how quickly it all can fall apart. I hope the better days come soon for us all.
This is ridiculous. The travel/hospitality industry is stone cold dead worldwide until this burns out, and then it will go back to being exactly what it was before. And since it blew up big first in NYC (at least in the US), NYC will likely recover first.
OK, but I wouldn't count on NYC tourism or business approaching anywhere close to "normal" for a year or more. Hope I'm wrong though...
For those of you that live in apartment buildings in NYC, curious how it is with your neighbors and being stuck at home? My neighbor is having a party so clearly he's taking the stay at home shelter very serious
