Very hard to predict how all this is gonna turn out. Humans are a social species, so it is anyone’s guess how everyone will respond to being ordered not to gather. When 9/11 happened, one major way that New Yorkers started the healing process was to gather together in parks, churches, temples, schools and libraries to simply grieve with others. Bars and restaurants also served as gathering places for some sense of a return to normalcy.
Now we are pretty much being ordered not to gather at all, and, in fact, to stay home and not go out, all with no idea of how long this will last. I think this might be unprecedented. There aren’t any plans to cover something like this. Who and what are important are unknowns. Should the neighborhood bodega stay open? How about dentists and optometrists and the like? How are bars and restaurants that have not done deliveries gonna cope? Do people that stay home still get paid? And if not, what happens to them when the rent or the mortgage payments come due? And on and on...
The Chinese have a curse that says, “May you live in interesting times...” It seems that this curse has been visited upon us all.
