Yep, Rockaway Playland is what I was referring to. A bunch of us from Hollis would get together and go on our outings via the train a couple times per year. Hit the Playland and then hit the Beach or vice versa. It was great.

Unfortunately, Rockaway will never raise from the ruins because of the amount of public housing holding the peninsula hostage.

Here's a horrible story from today's NY Times about the Refern Projects. Sadly, you can insert the names of the Hammels or Edgemere into the scenario and not much would change.

Only in NYC would you put projects in a prime beachfront area with a subway link. You would think they would have developed high-end condos that would attract people with $$$.

Of all the places to put projects, they went and screwed up a sure money-maker for City Hall.

I also grew up in Far Rock as a child, blissful ignorance. Now, 20 some-odd years later, I would only move to Rockaway Park. More diversity, waaaay less crime, cost of living is slightly higher, but what's a little more money when compared to getting home to your family and enjoying your neighborhood. Not to mention a lesser potential of being mugged, harrased, crowded, and not having to hear gun shots in your sleep?

It is sad, but the class groups within the rockaways (like most neighborhoods) are completely foreign to each other and are separated by disfunction on one side and hard-working earners on the other.

Yep, I always wondered why they loaded up Far Rockaway with projects. Does anyone know the real history of why they did this a long time ago?

Far Rock is horrible. Easily the worst neighborhood in Queens.

robert moses and his city planning.....but to be fair to him, many bungalow slums already existed on the future sites of public housing in the rockaways. same situation in coney island.
