It was a poorly laid out store, and it hasn't gotten better. The shoehorned it into the only space they could find. I live right there, and I'm not in their much. I shop more at Key and haul my stuff up the hill, or go to Fairway (which has gotten worse.)

Recent reviews on Yelp pretty much sums things up.

Fairway needs to find another space, as their current spot on 86th has always been a mad house in large part due to layout.

Everyone thought arrival of WF would put Fairway out of business, but that hasn't happened. In fact quite the opposite, Fairway is more mobbed than ever. There was a bit of lull when WF first opened, but after that honeymoon was over people came right back to Fairway.

That new Target on 86th in former Barnes and Noble space is *meh*. Again layout doesn't thrill me (it didn't when it was B&N), so usually go to Lexington avenue store.

IMHO Whole Foods started going down the toilet once Amazon got their evil mitts on the place.

The Whole Foods at 87th & 3rd is just so miserable. I stopped shopping there a few years ago and started going to New Jersey and elsewhere. Occasionally I'll shop at that Fairway, but it feels like a rat maze, especially the downstairs area. I do like that they carry lots of European imports from Italy, France, etc. The problem with Whole Foods is that Amazon takes anybody. Heck, I even got an invite from Amazon and I have never done any sort of work in retail. Only white collar work. I recall them saying that they wanted to ramp up hiring so they must've reached out to their customers (that's the only connection I have with them, as I have only worked in white collar jobs). Out of curiosity, I looked into their post card. They just have positions on their website. Any Joe Scmoe can apply, take their test or whatever. You don't need experience and I'm guessing education isn't important either, so all of the ghetto people apply for the basic positions.

A lot of supermarket jobs are entry level, and always have been.

Both the WF and Fairway on the UES are terrible with horrible layouts. Only time I go to those locations are if I'm coming home from being at a bar on the UES. UWS has both plus Tarder Joes.

I think people who use self checkout should get a discount since you are doing the work of a cashier.

Nay, all the way.

They kill jobs.

They isolate yet more middle-class people from workers.

They create another situation of people taking orders from machines.

And, most of all, the corporation is getting customers to do unpaid work for them, shifting their financial burden onto the public.

When the government makes workers too expensive, or the workers make themselves too expensive, companies are incentivised to replace their labor by other means. And technology is enabling this more and more. Get used to it.

Let's be a little real here. There are just not a lot of good spaces for big supermarkets in Manhattan.
