Been going to Wegmans in NJ for years; it's nothing special IMHO. Not much different than Whole Foods.
That being said compared to the pi$$ poor things NYC calls supermarkets, yeah can see why Wegmans is considered heaven.
It is generally more affordable than Whole Foods, but what I've seen in recent years is that Wegmans has been more about its own brand of products. They aren't bad, but it may be something for people to consider when shopping there.
The thing with Wegmans is that they are big on good customer service and the stores are largely of a good size, with cleanliness being important. They are also known for treating their workers pretty well.
Wegman's came to my neighborhood fairly recently, it has good prices on staples (their own products) like bread, eggs, milk, etc. Be careful to look at labels when you buy other items like cheese, apple sauce, etc. some say use within three days of opening, I just happened to notice the labels a few days ago and had been eating them long after the 3 day period.
I found a little spider in a packaged salad so I don't buy it anymore, but I enjoy shopping there for the most part.
Their jelly donuts are delicious, the best I've tasted.
I rather shop at Costcos, Wegman's too pricey and their brands are nice but not as cheap as Kirkland's.
