As for everyone else, I despise the fact that you people group Section 8 voucher holders into the same category. I don't feel that I need to validate myself for anybody, so I wont. I asked if anyone knew of any single family homes for rent in Putnam County, if you were incapable of answering that simple question your comments should have been kept to yourselves.

Another thing the OP needs to consider about moving into Putnam County... If they work in the city the cost of their commute will not only increase in time but in cost. By hundreds and hundreds of dollars per month and potentially multiple hours per day.
If you're already struggling financially you're adding another burden. With a longer commute you'll probably also need more child care, another large expense unless that's subsidized for you too.

I worked in property management in the Albany area for several years. All of the places we managed that took Section 8 were apartments and mostly they were multi-family homes. Very few apartment complexes accepted it. We had 0 single family houses for rent that accepted Section 8. We had numerous landlords stop accepting it because the tenants weren't paying their portion so they go stiffed every month. Your best bet for finding a rental is using a realtor or property management firm. It won't be easy and be VERY careful about the neighborhood! I'll leave it at that.

I want to ask a general Section 8 voucher question -- I was of the impression that the residents of a given county are given preference for section 8 vouchers over non residents looking to relocate. Is that true?
There's a woman on another board who is Section 8 and purchasing her home (Suffolk County). She has gone through numerous inspections, and has had to do many things to bring the house up to the requirements, but she is very excited

Section 8 is purchasing homes now.... So when is the next big fiscal crisis? Did anyone learn a lesson from the last debacle? If you have enough money to own a home... You should not be bumming collecting tax payers money... what a burden these leeches are. Im sure there kids will get free lunch to, instead of mommy wide snatch spending the 25 cents it takes to make a PBNJ Sandwitch

You know, this whole thread is pretty funny. I grew up in an affluent town in upper Westchester. I married, had kids and moved to putnam county. My husband developed a drinking problem so I left him. He does not hold down a job so therefore does not work and therefore does not pay his child support. Our kids live with me and I support them fully on a very small income. I don't hold section 8 housing voucherzls but I barely get by working two jobs to support my children. How dare you people suggest she shouldn't look in putnam to raise her kids? You don't know the circumstances this family has faced to bring them to this point in their lives so keep your mouths shut. You would never, ever suspect that I had to ask for help from social services in the past few years if you met me. Things are not always as they seem.

Good points. And let's face it, if you lose your job for whatever reason and remain unemployed for awhile, most people will collect unemployment and food stamps to help them along the way until they find a new job.

Not necessarily. It depends on the Housing Authority. And the trend is against that because it can be used as a tool of discrimination.
