This sounds like something many of us have experienced.

I had a friend I met at work who for a time was a very good friend, I thought, and she moved to another country for work for a few years. A couple of years ago, she told me she would be coming in for a visit in the summer and we would get together. I looked forward to it.

Never heard anything from her, but then I ran into another woman at work and she said very brightly, "Oh, I had lunch with Sue last week! She was back here for a few weeks. It was so good to see her." This other woman lives two miles from me, and we are friendly, though we didn't ever socialize outside of work. It would have been nice if all three of us could have gotten together for lunch...but I guess I wasn't important enough to include. It was a bit hurtful, but I thought about it, and I decided to accept the fact that I'm just not that important to her.

Now she's back in the US, and I got an email from her asking for contacts from our old workplace because she's looking for a job, and saying she was going to be in touch, and we'd get together, blah blah blah, but I didn't believe her and after this time has passed, I don't care that much. I sent her the names and phone numbers she wanted. She got the job she was after, and I haven't heard anything since, as expected.

ETA: HAHAHA, I too didn't notice that the thread was elderly. I guess this is something that brought up feelings in a lot of people!

By not obsessing about it. You have no idea what factored into the person's thinking.
