What a satisfying thread this was!! Like a mystery novel and it was solved toward the end. Thanks for coming back and settling this six year later, OP. Were the comings and goings related to the arrest?
I didn’t read the entire long thread so maybe someone said this already, but maybe not.
How do you know that he was awake at odd hours, coming & going unless you were also up at those same hours day and night? What were you doing? Should someone be suspicious of you?
Here we are 6 years later, and my suspicions were confirmed last year when my neighbor was taken into police custody. I'd rather not say for what since I'd like to remain anonymous and my neighbor possibly has connections with organized crime. And we honestly don't know the list of all the charges. Neighbor is out on bail and his home is going on the market.
And a thanks to all who had useful comments. To all who made smarty-pants comments, you may now commence eating crow.
But was his arrest, 5 years later, connected to his coming and going? Or was he a guy who kept odd hours, and just happened to also commit a crime?

The Op said sometimes he was out watering his lawn. What could possibly be suspicious about watering your lawn at 2am?
I had a close friend and neighbor who worked night shift. When SO was not home we would meet after her shift, hit the 24 hour grocery stores and department store insanities, had breakfast and she would go home and I to work.
Neighborhoods with known organized crime figures are usually the safest around.
Absolutely!
