I'm around a lot fewer toxic people now that I've moved to a city where the economy is better.
There are some people I would rather not be around. I'm not blunt enough to tell them that I don't like them, but I'm almost always either working for pay or working on my own projects when they want me to do something, and I'm telling the truth! This is my busy time of the year. I can stop for a cup of coffee with someone I care about but those who tend to gossip and complaint violently about trivial matters aren't worth my precious breaks.
Oh yes, I can think of 5 or 6 people off the top of my head that I have had to put up with but I just don't have it in me to tell them to **** off and never speak to me again. My way around it is just to avoid them. Some of them I have successfully avoided for a few years now.
It depends on how many people one dislikes. My dad once told me 'If you dislike 1% of the people around you, try to avoid them. If you dislike more people than that then try to challenge and change yourself'. I dislike roughly 10% of the people I meet so I swallow my opinion and try to socialize with them.
Maybe I should not have said the word DISLIKE. Instead I should have said that I don't enjoy being around these people and conversation with them is frustrating or boring due to a complete lack of personal chemistry and their lack of social skills. Regardless it is nearly impossible to avoid these people because they are:
The people you are assigned to sit next to at an conference or convention.
A friend of a friend who tags along
The husband or SO of a family member
A leader or active participant of the homeowners association or community group you participate in.
I rather stare holes in the air as socializing with people I don't like.
