North Carolina typically ranks seventh in apple production in the United States. North Carolina has over 300 commercial apple operations comprised of 10,000 bearing acres of apple orchards. Eight million bushels of apples can be produced in a given year. Over 80% of those apples come from orchards located in Henderson County, but not this year. The crop was mostly wiped out by the Easter weekend freeze. The worst loss since 1954.

Not a food or fruit, but North Carolina ranks second in the nation for Christmas trees. North Carolina produces over 18% of the real Christmas trees in the United States. North Carolina has over 1,500 Christmas Tree growers, with approximately 42 million trees growing on over 30,000 acres. Ashe, Avery, Alleghany, Watauga, and Jackson counties produce 88% of North Carolina's Christmas trees. The North Carolina Fraser Fir has been judged the Nations Best through the National Christmas Tree Association and chosen for the White House nine times (more than any other species)....1971, 1973, 1982, 1985, 1990, 1993, 1995, 1997 2005 and 2007. The North Carolina Fraser fir Christmas tree is the most popular Christmas tree in North America and is shipped into every state in the U.S. as well as the Caribbean Islands, Mexico, Canada, Bermuda, Japan and other points all over the world.

There is two types of barbecue Eastern style and Lexington Style sometimes known as western but the city Lexington with over 20 bbq restaurants has claim that style title also known as the barbecue capital and has annual Festival usually 2nd to last saturday of october this year on the 24th.

Lexington BBQ differs from Eastern-Style in two distinct ways: 1) it's always made from pork shoulders only, ala' Memphis-style, and not from whole-hog carcass, and 2) unlike Eastern-Style which uses vinegar and the barest traces of hot pepper and miniscule amounts of flavorings if any in a "wetting agent" a sous chef would have a hissy about if you called it a "sauce", Western-NC/Lexington-Style definitely uses a real sauce, of which heavy doses of ketchup are added to the vinegar base universally, and often a small amount of sugar is added as well.

Lexington style is often serve with red slaw and it cabbage made with ketchup and other spices served with delicious hushpuppies and sweet tea.

North Carolina is the #1 producer of sweet potatoes in the United States. More than 40% of sweet potatoes come from North Carolina.

North Carolina is the #2 state in hog raising. Also NC is #1 for turkey raising and #4 overall for poultry.

And of course there's tobacco. (#1)
