Now that the nefarious Art Pope has taken North Carolina hostage, and because of the runaway corruption involving everything from EMS providers to college sports - I wouldn't recommend relocating to NC. In fact, I'm planning to move out as I only see things getting worse unless more honest people start getting seriously involved and engaged.

I'm from Texas and in a couple of months I'm moving to NC to be near my daughter. I did spend 16 years there in the military. You did not elaborate on what "all the crap" was but in my experience Texas is a much better place to live. I'm not looking forward to having my military retirement taxed (and my COLA cut by congress in DC) and paying state income tax if I'm lucky enough to find a good job. I'm in DFW and this area is exploding. If you're unemployed it's because you want to be. People are pouring into here from across the country. Seems like half the new people I meet are from Cali. I cannot think of anything that makes NC better than Texas in any way.

Geography; NC has the Blue Ridge Mountains which are quite different than those in Texas and offer amenities such as ski resorts, and a longer (and some might say a better) coastline. I'd also say, pound for pound, NC has TX beat in higher ed. Using the US News and World Report rankings as a gauge, NC has one liberal arts college (Davidson) and three national universities (Duke, Wake Forest, UNC) in the top 50. Texas, by contrast, has no liberal arts colleges and only one national university (Rice) in the top 50.

Disturbing and true! If people would start to vote with their dollars people like Art Pope wouldn't be billionaires to use their money to buy elections by the redistricting that's been done. Every time I see people in his stores I want to say do you know where that money is really going? To work against you!

For the record, pubs won the 2010 election in districts drawn by dems. Romney, McCrory, and Burr won statewide elections.

Yes, this is true but you have to set some context around the 2010 election cycle nationally to get the entire picture. 2010 was a banner year for Republicans nationally as a combination of disappointment that "everything wasn't fixed in 18 months" was coming from the middle and the left, combined by racial prejudice and socialism hysteria on the right. These factors motivated conservatives, turned some of the middle toward the right and left the liberals and progressives in the "meh" column as it related to the vote. The Republicans knew full well that their gains were not sustainable once passed that particular election cycle without changes to the districts to de-emphasize metro areas voting powers (particularly the Triangle, Charlotte and Triad for NC). Lucky for them that their perfect storm election came in a Census year where they were able to redraw many states' districts (including NC) to the tune of not actually getting more votes than Democrats but still ending up with many more US House seats in 2012. The same might be true for NC Senate and GA as well. It's probably safe to say that NC's Republican delegation across the board is way over-represented relative to the actual votes cast.

Before I hear about how Democrats do that too in redistricting, consider the following before stating a false equivalency. This is only the second time in 70 years (that's 35 election cycles) that the party that won more total votes didn't control the House of Representatives. See link at the end of this post.

A perfect storm is going to be necessary on the other side for this to be reversed in NC and other states where the Republicans seized control in 2010. Fortunately for the Democrats, the next big opportunity is in a presidential election year, 2020, where Democrats' participation is much more robust than in mid term cycles......Oh yeah, then there's those voter ID laws that are intended to curb that participation....

I used to love NC BBQ, especially the eastern style. Since I currently live near Kansas City, I have learned to enjoy that style. I like thicker chunks of BBQ, and a lot of NC style is over chopped to the point where it's almost mush. I also don't much care for the vinegar sauce any more. NC style is also VERY greasy, probably because they use the entire pig instead of just a shoulder.

I'd much rather have a thick, but not super sweet sauce. I also like the variety of KC, Texas, and Memphis BBQ. Most NC 'que is just shredded pork and sometimes chicken. However, I do miss all of the side items like Brunswick stew, crowder peas, and banana pudding. Bill Ellis buffet in Wilson is pretty awesome, but the 'que is nothing special.
