How is Rt. 50 from South Riding to 28 these days? Has the traffic improved at all?

Nope. It's worse, because 50 is under construction. Maybe it will be better, once they are done widening it, but then there will be all the new people from Willowsford and other developments adding to the amount of traffic.

It's slowly getting worse every year. More residential development every year (e.g. East Gate). I have a reverse commute and it never ceases to amaze me what people are willing to put up with (I frequently drive west-bound Braddock/620 into Loudoun Co. and it's not uncommon to see traffic backed up for well over a mile to get through a 4-way stop just to avoid 50).

Loudoun County Parkway (606) will be stop and go for 4-5 miles. Herndon/Poland backs up. Tall Cedars backs up. It looks painful, but some people find the benefits of living in SR well worth it. I had some neighbors that moved there a year or two ago. The traffic was every bit as bad as expected but they are still happy with the move.

Induced traffic. It will never be better until they figure out land use, not just widening and accommodating further and further sprawl in Loudoun and Chantilly

Yes, we travel west on Braddock around 9 a.m. once a week and the traffic past the Cox Farms intersection headed into Fairfax is brutal.

The traffic is insane, it commonly takes 30 -45 min to go 13 miles up to dulles either on 606 or 50 to 28.
The negligance of Loudoun, Fairfax, Toll Brothers, and Vdot is borderline criminal.
Who couldnt see this forthe last 10 years. There might be a few years of improved traffic on the new road before it is back over capacity like rt 7.
Almost makes u want another recession to cut back traffic...
Sure is brutal to goto work these days.

While much of what you and others in the thread have said, the quote above pretty much sums it up. Traffic in the South Riding/Dulles South corridor is no worse than other areas of Loudoun. Loudoun as a whole is seriously behind on road infrastructure.

As I've mentioned in other threads, your commute and quality of life have everything to do with where your job is.

To answer the OP's question, traffic is rough right now while Rt. 50 expansion is taking place. A significant improvement will be seen when the project is completed in late 2014.

I beg to differ. Years ago, when my wife and I first moved here, we decided between a house in South Riding and one in Ashburn. We chose the latter. And we are so very glad we did. One of the deciding factors at the time was the road network. We could see very easily that Ashburn had multiple major roads converging on it, 7, 28 and Greenway, which meant options if one of the roads experienced a significant incident. South Riding had only one -- 50. And the current home values seem to reflect this -- the two homes we looked at back years ago were about the same then, but there is a substantial price gap between the two now in favor of the one in Ashburn.
