Yes you can easily live on $80K. Considering you will quickly increase your pay, make that move right now. You may be able to work only 4 days a week or work virtually depending upon your job.

You forgot to mention that the DC area houses the more white collar professionals than anywhere else in America. An area rich in money usually warants more expensive cars.

I actually read his (ScranBarre's) posts with much enthusiasm. However, the poser thing really gets me.

I have been thinking about moving to the RTC area and I will totally admit to owning a BMW, frequenting starbucks and using the venerable iphone. But what can I say? I paid for my car in full up front, I like grabbing breakfast on the run and taking it to the office with me and I LOVE being constantly connected via my phone to email and the web at all times...I now no longer tote my laptop with me everywhere I go. Plus, I am a die hard mac addict and have one both at home and at the office.

I also enjoy a cocktail after work. I live alone and am currently single. Why wouldn't I want to enjoy that cocktail in a more social atmosphere? Better than doing it alone at home and, who knows, I might meet someone or make friends.

Why does enjoying these things make a person a poser? Just because a person has all of those things doesn't mean that they are trying to look like someone they're not. Couldn't it simply be that that person actually is a white collar professional?

BMWs are superior vehicles.
IPhones are competent for phone usage.
Starbucks is................average.

You can do better than Starbucks!

Ok, I will totally admit that you have a point. Not the greatest coffee in the world but they are on the right side of the street when I am driving to work.

How convenient. If they put one on every street corner, then they will always be on everyone's way to work!

Janey, enjoying things that you can afford doesn't make you a poser. That's life. Unless someone is Bill Gates or the Queen of England, there will be some people who have more than they do. Most people accept that as reality. There are, however, some people who wish they could afford things but can't at this stage of their life and let their envy color their attitude. Since this area has a high percentage of educated people who are successful in their careers, it has a higher percentage of targets for the envious (not that we are stating who they are) to envy.

DON'T get trapped into the horrible commute -- life is too short -- plenty of people are very happy in a townhome.

Again -- congrats and good luck!
Silly me, and I thought having the VRE option to get to work was a great thing. Maybe if they offered massage chairs.

Excellent post. I too love my BMW. It's a joy to drive, especially on nice days, with the top down and the music up. Why shouldn't we have what we want and enjoy it?
