Maybe its just where I live but when i'm running/walking (local trails, sidewalks not W&OD) and say hello, almost all will return the greeting and smile. Its excellent.

Normally I don't greet people on the W&OD Trail either because there's just too many people on it, and most of the cyclists who come up right behind me without saying "on your left" (as they're supposed to) make me too frightened to! LOL! Maybe my bad hair scares people?!

I'll second the suggestion about finding a place of worship that has an active young adult presence or ministry, if that appeals to you.

Nearly everyone I see on my daily walks (in an assortment of neighborhoods) here will smile and/or say hello. When I was visiting relatives not far from Scranton over the summer we walked on a town trail and not ONE person would make eye contact. I asked my relatives who were with me about this and they said speaking to others is just not done there.

So to the OP, just be yourself, don't worry about others, make the effort to do things that interest you and you'll have no problem finding friends -- there are so many people here that you're bound to find plenty with whom you have things in common. Welcome!

With all due respect I frequently woked out on both the Wyoming Valley Levee System and Lake Scranton when I still lived back in NEPA, and 9/10 of the people whom I greeted would respond in-kind.

Hi! I am moving to NOVA in 2 weeks. I'll be working for the Dept of State in DC. Definitely interested in meeting people. My biggest fear is being very lonely there. I'm pretty shy, and also gay..so I think it makes it even a bit more of a challenge. I like to keep busy and social, so I am hoping for the best
