I'm in favor of the rabies quarantine. Can you imagine the disaster if the rabies virus made it into the mongoose population?

The longest incubation for rabies is 6 months. If the dog contracted rabies before the vaccination, then the shot does not prevent the disease. Rabies virus travels in the nerves, not the bloodstream. Once the virus enters the nervous system, there is no way to stop it.

Quarantine is not really long enough, so the state of Hawaii is giving credit for time from the vaccination, not from the blood titer test.

Inconvenient, yes, but very necessary.

Incidentally, the rabies vaccination is extremely effective. As long as your pet was not exposed to the virus before being vaccinated, he will be safe from rabies.

The quarantine is to make sure he was not exposed before he received the shot. The blood titer is to make sure his immune system has responded correctly to the vaccination.

Props to the state of Hawaii for being so careful.

Thank you for explaining that to me. It made no sense and I found no real explanation in the online literature. Now if only they were as strict on the health of the dogs that are produced and kept here.
But I will say I've seen some wonderfully spoiled dogs owned by locals.

I heard once that there is an old law on the books that if ONE case of rabies is diagnosed on one of the islands ALL the dogs and cats on the island can be impounded and euthanized. I can just imagine the state actually trying to implement the law, but it's there.

That's probably why guns are not allowed in Hawaii. Otherwise, if they tried to kill all the dogs and cats on the island, there would be a bloody armed rebellion.

Thanks everyone for the info about rabies. I have to do what I have to do anyway, but it's better that I am now a little more convinced about this need.

Then Why? do they now require the Kansas City test be redone every three years? Seems like overkill to me AND expensive. Love the ag people, Scruffy has come thru 5 times this year but it does seem excessive to have to keep up with the normal rabies shots connected with the KC test.
