We've been to the Applebee's in Fountain Valley, California and weren't particularly impressed with the food. Sadly, it was about on par with the King's Hawaiian Bakery and Restaurant in Torrance.

Television was in Hawaiʻi before I was born as well; however, cable and satellite television came along after I was born.

Yeah, change isn't always good nor is it the best choice and the same goes for remaining stagnant.

People in Hawaii aren't missing much with no Applebee's or Olive Garden, but there does seem to an obsession with people born in Hawaii to gravitate towards mainstream/mainland things.

Thats because people for years have drowned us with commercialism saying your not complete or normal unless you have this, that or etc. And like Ive said b4 in the past the population makeup of Hawaii has change, before locals outnumbered tourist 4 to 1, now it tourist and newcomers outnumber locals 6 to 1, so yes who do you think will win in changing Hawaii? For generations hawaii was different from the mainland, and currently young locals are suffering from that human condition that the grass its always greener on the other side.
And for once I would have to agree with you on what you said.
Hopefully, you realize that the members of the Queen Emma Health Systems Board of Trustees is comprised of some of the most influential people in Hawaiʻi....
Most influential business community people.... how does that translate to "policymaker", which is what politicians do.

If you think the homogenization of Honolulu is localized, I would say you are not very well traveled. The same thing has happened to every city in the U.S. The mass media, business consolidation and the ease of traveling have changed and shrunk the U.S. Not just Honolulu.
You also can not say "Hawai'i is losing her individuality", because you can not generalize for the whole state. Hilo, Lihue and Kahului (to name a few) are nothing like Honolulu and really small towns like Waimea and Hanapepe have hardly changed at all.

So you are saying people are so stupid that they see a McDonald's commercial and they have to go? They have no free will? I like McDonald's commercials. I think they are funny and heart warming and better than most other commercials. But I still realize that their food is mostly very high in fat and sodium content so I never go there no matter how compelling the ads might be.
And Kauai get about a 20/1 ratio on visitors to residents, so by your theory shouldn't Kauai be overrun with mainland stores and restaurants much worse than Honolulu? But is isn't, so back to the drawing board on that one. I'd also love to see your source for "locals" outnumbering visitors 4-1, what year that was and how you are defining a "local."
Most of the visitors to Oahu stay in Waikiki because that is where about 90% of the hotel rooms. The scattered other hotels don't impact the areas they are in as much. I would say Maui is far more impacted by tourism than Oahu is.
Hmmm I have to say im very impressed with your intelligence, if intelligence was hot air you could fill your balloon so big that you would fly way above everyone else with your intelligence.

So your saying that eliminating almost everything unique is justified by what? Uhmmmm everyone else is doing it? If so? then you sir have made my argument for me. And before we go on I want you to understand im not anti modernation or big business or profit. What I am against is gross imbalance. When 95% and counting of places we shared growing up that were unique are disappearing, then yes i would say there is an gross imbalance.
