Your qoute tim: You also can not say "Hawai'i is losing her individuality", because you can not generalize for the whole state. Hilo, Lihue and Kahului (to name a few) are nothing like Honolulu and really small towns like Waimea and Hanapepe have hardly changed at all. end qoute:

Your wrong uncle, when we were younger major tourism was really only locatted in waikiki, and parts of Honolulu. Today we have communities outside of honolulu in Oahu saying please don't send us anymore tourists. We now have another island that has turned major tourist and thats Maui. Now ok growth is fine, but how much will ever be enough? Will there ever be enough? Those small towns will they still be here in 20 years. Further who suffers from the changes? Just check the stats on who is leaving Hawaii? Who is Homeless. It will wake you up. Unless your one of the stockholder or tourism investers? Bottom line change is good within reason and with balance.

I say this without any stink uncle, you told us when you lived in Oahu,Now I thought Oahu was gorgeous in the 70s, 80s. But my auntie was from your generation 50s and Ive seen pictures and remastered videotape of that time in Honolulu and Oahu, and OMG! three times the trees and flowers, you could see the landscape, the hills etc. It was 4x more gorgeous then when I was a kid. And with a sad heart I just don't understand how you think this concrete jungle is better? It bring tears to my eyes. I would expect that attitude from a newcomer or someone else who hasnt experienced what we had, or have you forgotten?

So for the sake of disagreeing but not being disagreeable? Are you saying your for all the modernism? Since you haven't made your point really known?

Your qoute: The same thing has happened to every city in the U.S. The mass media, business consolidation and the ease of traveling have changed and shrunk the U.S. Not just Honolulu. end qoute.

So your saying that eliminating almost everything unique is justified by what? Uhmmmm everyone else is doing it? If so? then you sir have made my argument for me. And before we go on I want you to understand im not anti modernation or big business or profit. What I am against is gross imbalance. When 95% and counting of places we shared growing up that were unique are disappearing, then yes i would say there is an gross imbalance.
95% of what is gone? 95% of the surfing spots? 95% of local restaurants?

I am not for or against modernization, I say it simply is. Being against it is like being against growing old, both are going to happen regardless. Do I wish Waikiki was the way it was in the 50's and 60's sure, but would I support the draconian, anti-liberty measures that would have had to happen to make that so? No.

I suggest that you read "Land and Power in Hawaiʻi: The Democratic Years" by George Cooper and Gavan Daws, research how "political action committees" (PACs) operate, and explore the State of Hawaiʻi Campaign Spending Commission's website.
I've read the book, know it well and I find OpenSerets.org much better for transparency in government.

I also know where the Democrat politicians get their money from and whose nest they feather, but all of that has nothing to do with the International Market Place and why it is being replaced.

Tourism was mostly located on Oahu, not just Waikiki, but Lahaina and Hilo got their share, even Kahului. You don't remember the hotels in Downtown, or up in Haleiwa because you are young.

The reason the majority of the tourists came to Oahu was the cruise ships. When the jet age started, everything changed, but even before that Hawaii changed when the first Europeans arrived here, then changed again when an aggressive chieftain decided he wasn't happy with just his Big Island kingdom and wanted more, and changed again as when the Americans began to arrive.

Many of the people who are homeless are those who like pakalolo better than work, don't value education and like to sit on their okole and moan.

No more huhu now.

Apparently, you need to reread "Land and Power in Hawaiʻi" because seem to have failed to understand how business, politics, and land use in Hawai'i are intertwined, despite the numerous examples given in the book.

"OpenSecrets.org" has little data about campaign spending at the local level in Hawaiʻi, such as mayoral and county council races. For instance, you aren't going to find how how much money Kirk Caldwell received from donors for his 2012 mayoral campaign there. I'll leave it to you to research and figure out how Kirk Caldwell, David Arakawa, George Atta, Gerald Saito, Keith Kurahashi, Group 70 International, and Michigan-based TRG IMP LLC. are all intertwined and linked to the "International Market Place Revitalization Project." And, to help you along, here's a link a PDF of the "draft Environment Impact Statement" (EIS)...
