Oklahoma was never as racist as the deep south simply because there simply weren't enough blacks to be a political threat.

OTOH, Oklahoma had probably as many "sundown towns" as any other state because we didn't have that many black residents. Towns like Edmond, Norman, Moore and Yukon did not allow black residents until the 1960s and 1970s. The northwest part of the state other than Enid was devoid of black residents.

Sundown towns were almost nonexistent in the deep south because there were no all white towns to speak of.

I'd like to think we were better people here but I really think it was a function of the numbers.

The very FIRST bill passed by our new state legislature in 1907 was a bill to implement Jim Crow in our state.

The tragic Tulsa riot ruined what had been the most prosperous African American community in the country and was caused by an incident that was for all purposes fabricated.

Oklahoma can be proud of a reasonably smooth school integration in the mid 1950s in which Governor Raymond Gary instructed residents that mayhem and violence would not be tolerated and for the most part people accommodated his request.

Oklahoma can be proud that OU and OSU integrated their universities much earlier than other southern public schools and did the same with their athletic programs. However, this in much part was due to the fact that George Lynn Cross and Bud Wilkinson at OU were both northerners.

I saw a very interesting show on OETA Last month about the end of segregation in Oklahoma in the 1950s. It was a very moving show, I want to see it again so I can record it. It was a very well done documentary, should be shown in our public schools.
