Indeed. $100,000 will buy you a heckuva house in a pretty decent neighborhood. In fact, if you're willing to apply a little elbow grease, you can pick up some nice homes for $75,000.

For $75,000 and in a decent neighborhood you'll be looking at a mighty small home.

That's not true. Not in Omaha, anyway.

Having said all this, I feel like a hypocrite because I'd prefer an attached garage that I can keep heated on certain occasions. I enjoy working with my hands, building or fixing things, changing my own oil, hobby activities, etc. During the winter, I'd be miserable in a detached garage without heat.

Does anyone know about what time attached garages became common?
1) Calking
2) Weather stripping
3) Insulation

For all the problems mentioned.

What you get for your money depends on the area, just like anywhere else location does matter. Omaha hasn't suffered as many parts of the country have, but there are still foreclosures out there and I'd check them out if I was planning on relocating to the area. As far as attached garages, many older houses do have them. The two houses I lived in were built around 1930, both had an attached unheated garage. If people do make upgrades its usually new windows and or a higher efficiency furnace. If you are planning a move, talk to locals about good areas, read the paper to get familiar with the city, and take a look at the Omaha crime map. Good Luck.
