Interesting. I'll put my bets on the asian areas and LA/adjacent areas:
Irvine, Garden Grove, Westminster, and Anaheim and Santa Ana since they have large populations. Also i wouldnt be surprised if there were some cases around my area in Yorba Linda since there's a decent amount of new chinese residents over the last few years.

Now that we have the information, how do we interpret it? Are the cases by place of residence or where the people are? Do Irvine and NB have 33 and 32 cases respectively or because of Hoag and Kaiser hospitals?

Anaheim and Huntington are tourist spots so naturally they will have more visitors which could increase the infections. Irvine and Newport have higher than average Chinese and Iranian populations but its likely most of these infections happened from travelers then community spread as the Chinese and Iranians took the virus seriously from the start as they were first affected by this. Possibly medical staff in these cities were infected as well treating these travelers. But not as surprising Westminster and Garden Grove are lower in infections because most of their populations are Korean and Vietnamese and their respective countries took immediate action to limit the spread. If you watch a lot of Korean and Vietnamese news they have been talking about this as a major crisis since it was first reported in January. Therefore people here watching this news or have family members there were already concerned early. Probably why you would see many people in these cities wearing masks since the outbreak. I still don’t see anyone wearing masks in my areas where I live in south county and I don’t expect many will until it’s too late. If you look at LA most of the infected areas are in places where people are still out and about while the Asian areas are low in infections as they have taking actions to prevent spread. Until we all begin to take this seriously it will only stay longer with us. Stay indoors people! It’s our only chance to end this in weeks and not months and will save a lot of lives too!

The total number of confirmed cases increased to 403 as of 03/28/20 (Including 4 deaths). So, no part of OC has been spared. Hopefully, with social distancing and other measures, there will soon be a flattening.

Interestingly, on a per capita basis, Newport Beach has the highest rate.



Irvine, with a population of slightly over 280,000 has 38 cases. Giving a per capita rate of 1.3 per 10,000 people.



Newport beach with a population of slightly more than 87,000 has 37 cases. A per capita rate of 4.2 per 10,000 people, 3 times higher.



Other cities with higher per capita infection rates:

San Juan Capistrano at 2.4 per 10,000
San Clemente at 1.9 per 10,000
Laguna Niguel at 1.9 per 10,000
Dana Point at 1.8 per 10,000
Huntington Beach at 1.6 per 10,000


Asian areas:

Garden Grove 0.4 per 10,000
Westminster 0.5 per 10,000
Irvine 1.3 per 10,000


Part of it may be older populations in some of the beach cities like Newport and Dana Point, skewing the number of people more likely to be sick enough to get a test.



I think another factor is that many people in Asian areas took this seriously earlier, voluntarily reducing outings, social distancing, mask wearing, etc, that helped reduce the extent of silent community spread earlier on.

OC has not released city information on confirmed cases for cities and unincorporated areas of 25,000 or less, due to their willful (?) misinterpretation of HIPAA. They had previously used the same excuse for not listing the other cities, but eventually bowed to public pressure.

LAGUNA BEACH, CA —Laguna Beach residents were shocked to find that the number of residents currently infected with coronavirus were not outlined on the Orange County Healthcare by-city report.

The County has determined that based on HIPAA laws, they cannot release independent information for cities with populations of less than 25,000. Therefore, Laguna Beach (population 22,723) will be listed in the "other" category and grouped with the unincorporated area, Laguna Woods, Coto de Caza, La Palma, Los Alamitos, Seal Beach and Villa Park (these areas have a cumulative population just over 200,000.)
