i never fully understood the mouth kissing greeting,,
like one said above, you have no idea where that mouth has been, we had one aunt that use to be a mouth-kisser with everyone ,,but she had a small dog with her all the time,,and the dog seemed to lick itself all the time,,and also lick my aunts face (always wondered if the dog got the two confused)
if i were a woman,,,id set the precedent right up front,,,no mouth-kissing,!
im no prude, im looking at the sanitation side of things,,
in the business world,,i despise shaking a womans hand,,,just feels stupid, ,,,but a hug wouldnt be appropriate,,,,maybe i should start with the lip-kissing,,,lol
also,,i've found very interesting, is what folks grow up with,,,they continue, if you are a family of -huggers (gotta hug everyone thru the front door) you continue to do this,,,when you are older,
i knew a very nice family that did this,,i wasnt use to that at all,,and either avoided the hugs,,or felt very uncomfortable!
I find it really weird that some people in the US lip kiss non spouse/partners. In France everybody kisses on the cheeks but lip kissing is reserved for more amorous situations. Where does the lip kissing come from? I keep seeing Americans on TV programmes kissing their mother, father etc.. on the lips and it's really odd ?
As far as hugging goes- have you tried the sideways hug? There are a couple of variations but here's one, you are side to side with the person, putting your arm around the person (you're reaching for the shoulder furthest from you- like posing for a picture or something), then you lean in and 'squeeze'.
HappyHome I think the suggestion of "sickness" might be worth a try... since the handshake offer didn't work. Of course it would be nice to be able to tell him how you feel.... but I understand that you don't want to offend... yet you want to be comfortable. The tissue approach might work.... walk in... sniff, sniff.... **cough** sniff, sniff... If you have a hand full of tissue and you are playing the part... you can tell him, "No hugs for me today gramps... I'm not in a huggy mood - sorry."..... Never know, maybe that will work and he won't get offended... Gesh - is there an easier way to go about it? lol My family is very huggy too....infact I will admit I'm one of the huggers... ((shame, shame)) LOL But it's only with people who want it... I won't give all that love without asking.... I would want the favor returned... "Want some love?" LOL LOL Just know you aren't alone HappyHome.... we feel for ya.... (hopefully that doesn't sound as bad as I think it does)....

havent seen this one yet,,,so you give them a wet one on the lips, and then a sideway hug??
It used to get so confusing to me even knowing the correct way to hug-which goes higher-your arms or mine, which way do you lean-this way, that way, ah heck, now I just blow them a kiss and SALUTE!

LOL! That's hilarious! I think that's what it comes down to nowadays.
maybe some well placed thumbtacks placed in strategic places would discourage the "huggies" ...dang, that is just mean! Sorry! Uh-oh here comes the old guy now.....
