Maybe the problem is that the OP lacks friends, connections, culture, and sophistication -- something that seems to be endemic among younger Canadians.

It's endemic to have those things or endemic not to have them?

Default Ottawa

I am from Toronto and got transferred to Ottawa for work. I have been here 3 years and hate it. It is colder, boring, snotty and overpriced. Actually it was voted the rudest city in Canada. I know many people here who are transferred to work here and do nto like it. I think if Gov was not here, this place would fall. I have requested to move out as I am 39 and my spouse 47 and wages are lower whereas cost of living is still very high. In fact, other than housing, Ottawa was more expensive than the bigger cities like Van and TO for food and other everyday necessities including water, etc. My water bill in TO was $20 a month...here it is $40 as of all the added fees. And garbage pickup only once a week despite higher property tax.......nothing positive about Ottawa.

O.P., how can you say that when you've got the canal RIGHT THERE to skate on, on almost daily basis (in the winter) if you so choose? Oh, what I would give, what I would give!
[I'm being quite sincere.]

Not trying to start **** with you but you are typical of what Ottawan's hate about arrogant Torontonians! Yes Ottawa it is colder in the wintertime for sure BUT I live in Toronto and it's no LA I can tell you that much. We get snow here and as a matter of fact there is 5 feet in my backyard as I am typing this! Windchill is brutal here and I can count on one hand how many times we've seen the sun here in the past 10 weeks! Not very often! Toronto isn't exactly Mr. Wonderful when it comes to socialization. We can be rude, arrogant and obnoxious to boot! Everything you complain about with Ottawa can be said about Toronto! Plus the price of gas here in the GTA is ridiculous! Why I must drive to butt-**** Port Hope just to fill up is ridiculous!

I have been living in Ottawa for 15 years now.I don't find it boring, maybe its because I haven't lived any where else when I moved here from Africa.I have visited Montreal twice and I found it boring compared to Ottawa. It could be because I am not used to the city.

It also does depends with what your interest are

Montreal is definitely not boring and you almost never hear people say that it is.

You do hear many people say Ottawa is boring (compared to Montreal and Toronto) but I don't think that is fair either.

For a North American city of its size, Ottawa is certainly not boring.

I just completed my second trip to Ottawa. I will admit that it's better than I thought...obviously the Byward Market area (why is it called "Marché By" in French and not "Marché Byward"?) is great, as well as a few other commercial arteries...I think Bank Street was a good one, I really enjoy streets like that. I stayed away from the Parliament and Canal areas this time, but I remember them being pretty nice last time. Chinatown was not that vibrant and not very authentic, but there are a few nice places there (including my new favorite Thai restaurant). I also really enjoyed the residential architecture of parts of "Old South Ottawa."

That said, the region definitely has a long way to go. Sparks Street was a HUGE letdown for me. And Gatineau seemed even more dead to me. But from what I've heard, Ottawa has come a long way in recent years, and if that trend continues it will be interesting to see in the coming years!

Old South Ottawa reminds me of a nicer version of Hamilton.

It was actually originally called the By Ward Market. As the market that was in the city ward that was named for Colonel John By. In French that would have made it the "Marché du quartier By" which I suppose was a bit unwieldy. So in French it was always called "Marché By" whereas in English the market's named evolved into one word "Byward" over time.
