I'm not talking about generally just "having interests". And I'm not talking about people as a whole. I'm talking about a five year old little girl and why swimming with dolphins wouldn't have sufficed.
By the time I was five I could identify a LOT of aquatic life. And I'd have taken sharks (mainly because of their sharp teeth and the way they moved through the water) over dolphins (not particularly exciting) every time. I didn't become a dolphin fan until it was discovered how intelligent they were and I found out the U.S. Navy was using them to find mines.
Once you’ve gotten your nerves under control, you’ll enter the Shark Realm where you’ll come within inches of sandbar sharks, nurse sharks and barracuda.
Shark Reef is a snorkeling adventure with sharks for big kids, teens and adults at Disney's Typhoon Lagoon Water Park.
Enter a captivating underwater world and see some incredible saltwater sea life up-close. Swim freely with leopard and bonnethead sharks, stingrays and schools of colorful tropical fish in this fascinating coral reef environment.

That's hilarious. I'd bet if the event in the OP had taken place at DW, there would be absolutely no outcry, just a rush for people to make a reservation.
Which brings us back to my original question, "Why not let your kid swim with a dolphin or some sort of fish instead?" What meaningful difference exists between one experience and the other, besides safety?
Sharks vs. dolphins. It's about what they wanted to experience.
Ugh, if you think the ocean where sharks were just being feed is a controlled environment, then there is no point discussing anything further.
I surely do apologize for not being intelligent enough to know about everything on God's green earth. If you'd like to educate me on why this situation was not controlled, please do. There is no reason to talk down to others. No one knows everything.

I thought it was controlled at first. But it looks like they're in a cove which goes out to sea. And the sharks are being attracted by freshly cut fish. I wouldn't take a 5-year old into that situation because there is literally blood in the water to bring in the sharks.
I WOULD take them to Disneyworld. That's in a huge tank and they use certified divers and lifeguards. The fish and sharks are fed a large breakfast of sassy little mice in red shorts before the tourists take the plunge so they aren't about to take a nip out of any visiting 5 year old's.

Not for nothing the difference between bonnetheads/leopard sharks and lemon/grey reef sharks is the same as the one between grizzly bears and raccoons. The big lamniforms are the polar bears in this silly analogy.
I might do this. Is it really more dangerous than taking your child skiing, canoeing, or camping (bears)?
