Why in the name of Willy Wonka were you anywhere near the candy section? With a two-year old? You rolled a cart carrying a grumpy two year old down the candy aisle in Costco?
Tell the old guy he is welcome to pay for the gum, then the kid can have some. Then ask the old guy if he would also like to go to the toy department and buy your kid some toys too!
Why confront the elderly man when his comment was not to her?
Just as shoppers should ignore the screaming kids, the parents should ignore those who make offhand comments to other people (even if they're meant to be heard by them).
P.S. to OP: Tell your child what I used to tell ours when they were little: Today's a looking day, not a buying day. LOL just be sure to throw at least a few "buying" days!
Oh, I did think. Oh, yes indeed I thought! I thought about what we did back in the Paleolithic Era (Detour and Distraction to avoid the candy coated Dinosaur eggs) since I'm old and grumpy and noticed all kinds of ageism in this thread.
I wonder what the magic age is when Precious Johnny can deal with the fact that he is not getting the stinking gum rather than having Mom jump through a bunch of hoops.

Avoiding the candy aisle means you have a Precious Johnny in the cart?
My mother NEVER took us down the candy aisle. I can remember being shocked the store had one when I was old enough to go to the store with a friend and his mom.
Paleolithic Era. No one was even thinking about Precious Johnny.

The other day I was waiting in line at the liquor store and saw two kids playing dodge ball in the entryway of the busy Fred Meyer. They were slamming into people, throwing the ball so that it hit people, etc. Even the liquor store clerk was annoyed and everyone in line was grumbling about the brats. So I went out, took the ball, and told the kids to stop playing and go sit down. They did. End of problem.
One of the other people in the liquor store line said "oh so they WERE your kids!" I said no, they're not, but that's no reason to put up with kids behaving like that. People seemed amazed that an adult would be able to pull rank on someone else's kids. Hello? Who runs the world these days, nine year olds?
Honestly, if people won't parent their kids, they really have to expect other people to do it for them. In the case of the OP, she's upset because someone supported her parenting? Gods, we can't win.
