This is slightly different because they weren't permitted at all, but our school district permanently confiscated cell phones for the rest of the school year if they were caught using them at school. I remember this vividly because I was always warning my children they better not use them in school because I wasn't going to buy a replacement. Fortunately my kids never had their phones taken but other kids did lose their phones.

Now it makes sense why they are targeting your son. You already made a name for yourself on a previous issue. Your temper basically put a target on your son's back.

Lunch monitors shouldn't be responsible for your son and his stuff.

Tit for tat? Two wrongs make a right? Do a favor, if not for you, your son, take the high road. Don't give in, by no means. You definitely have the right to complain and to get your computer back. Don't yell, listen, and if they don't let you know when you will get it back, calmly let them know you are in touch with your attorney (whether you are or not, they don't know) as well as the police regarding stolen goods. Got a letter to the editor of your local paper/TV station ready? Don't storm out. Walk out. Again, provide an appropriate model of conflict resolution, which this is, for your child.

You could send him in with an $80 tablet from Walmart, at least then if he lost it or it got broken or stolen you wouldn't be out much money. Or their cheapest laptops are about $300.

The status he gets from walking in with an expensive laptop is pretty much gone once the laptop is confiscated and daddy can't get it back from the principal right away.

I'm with those who said file a police report, and give a copy to the principal.

Oh for heaven skaes
I give up with you people. I am going to find people who are actually "helpful."

We gave you good advice. Try reading it when you're not upset.

You already have plans to take it up the ladder. You've been advised to not yell, and keep the focus on getting the lap top back; and to get a cheaper computer next time. All good advice. What else do you want?

I am reading this thread with amusement and puzzlement.

Firstly, schools are not able to permanently confiscate personal property simply because a child broke a rule. School rules are NOT laws. Any school rule that violates the law is invalid. No matter what a child does the school cannot just take your child's personal property and not return it to you. If I were the OP I would file a police report to recover my stolen property.
