Who cares if they know the difference or not? What possible difference does it make to you or your kids what some loon in California believes about Ivy League schools?
It's completely irrelevant. Many schools (Stanford, MIT, U Chicago, and UC Berkeley for instance) are better than the Ivies in many aspects. If people want to call those Ivies they might be wrong technically but in terms of overall quality and style of the education they might as well be correct.
It should be mandatory for whom to instill this crucial information? Parents? Schools? Perhaps the OP, in recognition of his/her sense it is so important, will accept the mandate
(This thread is really intended for those on the west coast. It's probably old knowledge for most of you on the east coast.)
I think it should be mandatory to teach students which colleges are in the Ivy league. This is often confused.
For example, UC-Berkeley is not Ivy league. It's a state college in California. Nor is Caltech or MIT.
There are only 8 Ivy league colleges:
Brown University
Columbia University
Cornell University
Dartmouth College
Harvard University
Princeton University
University of Pennsylvania
Yale University
If the college you're talking about is not on the list above, it's not Ivy league.
I would think those who have Ivy League aspirations would know schools qualify as Ivy League.
Stanford is not an Ivy school. There are only 8, and the grouping has to do with not just with scholarly activities but sports, mostly football. That's why they are mostly in New England.
Actually, who cares? The students should know the schools that are great for what they want to do. They do not need an Ivy League school for many majors. Stanford, MIT, UCLA, etc. may be just what they need. Ivy League has turned into a brand for prestige. It's not necessary to know which schools they are unless you really, really want to attend one.
