im not lumping you in with the people around me thats the point. the people around me are enjoying life in a vibrant big city. actually the worst place to live if youre poor is the country since your odds of changing that are much worse than a big metro. your odds of changing that on philly are much better than in the south as well. ive been to norfolk and richmond...not exactly places that havent seen their struggles. crime in miami is higher than philly. affordability in san diego and san fran is awful and la is overrated. there arent jobs in portland either. things arent rosy anywhere other than maybe texas

Well they don't know what they don't know yet,it's all fun and games when you're young. Go into some of the neighborhoods and look at the people there, although most of them don't know up from down either...but I've heard quite a few times that Philly is a self-loathing place and I most certainly am not one of them. I'm anything but a native of here and fight daily not to let any of it get into me.

ithey obviously know a lot more than you do so im not sure what there is to learn. ive been to many neighborhoods. you could choose to go into bad ones or good ones. the reality is many people are living good lives and even improving the city. good luck with your struggles with depression. were doing our best to drive the lasy of the self loathers into nj.

Wow such bravado,I'd venture to guess you're not a very long time resident of here since you are obviously missing the big picture here...

You don't know where I've been, but certainly more normal places than here. Nice deflection btw, warped is a good way to describe what this place does to people. While you're having your good times in Partydelphia, don't forget to notice the people that are a victim of the place as well...oh and turn on the news once in awhile also.

You are right about Rt 22. What a mess. I am talking about Blairsville, Indiana County. It is the worst.

Just over on Rt. 30 are Ligonier and Greensburg, which are nice little places. Even just the wide spots in the road are picturesque. There is nothing nice about this whole stretch until you get to Pgh.

i bought wood from chucks smoke house once but thats about the only thing i know about blairsville (since ive driven the length of rt 22 i must have at least been by it). ligonier is a cute town and greensburg has a lot of potential to be like west chester if pittsburgh continues to rebound. latrobe was pretty sad but theres enough there to come back some day. those places will be dependent on pittsburghs comeback imo. whats indiana pa like?

I used to live there in the late 80s. It is a college town (IUP) and was mostly centered on students, but it used to have some nice restaurants and shops. There is still a place there called Bruno's that has been there forever and has good Italian food. 30 or 40 years ago there were some bigger, independent department stores downtown, and it was more of a "town."

On its main street now are mostly bars for the college students. There is a very small art gallery and a small bookstore and a shoe store and a couple of second-hand stores.
It is known for being Jimmy Stewart's birthplace, and they show Jimmy Stewart movies and there is a statue of him in front of the courthouse. The regular movie theatre downtown closed years ago, but there is a small mall a couple of miles away that has movies too. Chain restaurants, pizza and bars, mostly now.

not to get off topic but have you been to the jean bonnet tavern outaide if bedford? strikes as something done well that is very pennsylvabian (historic tavern). its the only place ive been that offers beer from all over pa (erie, pittsburgh, central pa, and philly). i know its not that close. i think a restored rail service to greensburg and latrobe from pittsburgh....maybe as far as johnstown would do wonders for those towns.
rt 22 seems tnot to have recovered from the collapse of the prr
