Proposal to transform base of Ben Franklin Bridge trips at the start

I hate how the plaza is in the way of traffic flow and doesn't lend itself to anyone "visiting" it. It is stupid to want to cross 6th street around there to reach the plaza. So what is the point of it being there?

Thoughts?
Have to research this.. But wasn't some Cold War related bunker under there? I seem to recall there was some kind of bunker that had stored dried food or something in preparation wrt sheltering people.

The point of it being there is to separate traffic going onto the bridge from what is coming off the bridge as well as separating both from local traffic.

Probably has something to do with the disappearance of the state tax credit for movie and TV productions.

The space may have been used to store Civil Defense rations, but that wasn't the purpose for which it was created.

The space beneath that raised plaza at the BFB's west end was supposed to have been the terminal for the Public Service trolleys that would have crossed the bridge from Camden.

There are also trolley stations in both of the bridge's anchorages. The pedestrian-walkway-level lobbies were opened to the public for viewing during the bridge's 75th anniversary celebration in 2001. The next time you ride PATCO across the bridge, sit on the left side of the train (facing forward) and, as you pass through the anchorages, look down to your left. You should see a stairway cover poking through the surface. These stairs led to a concourse in the anchorage one level below the deck; elevators connected it to the walkway above and the ground level below.

The trolley tracks occupied what are now the two outermost roadway lanes. No trolleys ever used them: Public Service of New Jersey never connected its streetcar lines in Camden to them, and it shut the system down completely in 1932, six years after the bridge opened.

The outboard tracks for rapid transit trains weren't even laid until 1935, in preparation for the opening of the Bridge Line subway in 1936. In the Locust Street subway concourse at the 12th-13th Street station, one of the photomosaics that PATCO installed a few years ago shows one of those outboard spaces bereft of rails.

Unfortunately probably true. A very dumb decision considering that the movie business has a foothold in Georgia for instance.

Developer gets permit for residential building at Society Hill Acme site

Wouldn't something a little taller and thinner be nice on the Acme site? A 53' box is going to look like a stubby wide load that plopped from the sky.

I believe this is a by-right build at this point.

From the article:The project will be subject to review by the Philadelphia Historical Commission because it is located within the Society Hill historic district, and by the city's design review board, Addimando said.

There's a good chance, imo, that that new development will happen.

There's already positive energy in the immediate area.

The article mistakenly cited Blatstein ,and the former State Bldg, which he no longer has anything to do with. Note, also not a single word about the Inquirer Bldg which will be a huge negative distraction going forward if it stays like it is.

Supposedly permits are going to be issued shortly to convert the Boner Forever building into senior living apartments. I would love this building to look new again. Never ever would I thought that the Divine and Boner would get redone.
