You're not kidding. I can't think of a more soulless large city that has basically sold itself to big developers to completely let itself get taken over by boring, suburban-bred yuppies (not trying to create tension--I'm a boring, suburban-bred yuppie, too, but economic and racial diversity is key for vitality). DC is actually a good case study for Philly in terms of seeing what can happen when development/gentrification goes too far.

While change in Philly can seem frustratingly slow at times (although even that seems to be changing), at least the benefit is the city is much more cautious and balanced in its approach to new development and its affect on people.

I always think Philly is one of the few American cities that doesn't obsessively compare itself to New York, since--due to proximity--it knows very well it isn't New York. Compare Philadelphians with the delusions of grandeur from Bostonians or San Franciscans.

(Another is Los Angeles, which is the one city that unnerves New Yorkers, I feel like, since it's as full of stuff as NYC is but the lifestyle and the "feel" is so different.)

Philadelphia will never have the wealth or high-paying jobs base that DC does, so I see that as a non-issue. Top talent on the East Coast goes mostly to Boston, New York, or DC, not Philadelphia.

Depends on what you define as talent. Different strokes for different folks.
Philadelphia will never be as pretentious(well I hope) as those cities either. That is a very good thing.

Simply not true. Contrary to conventional belief, Philadelphia is doing very well to attract and retain college-educated young adults, at one of the highest/fastest rates in the county, no less (see this report from last Fall: Young and Restless: How is your city doing? | City Observatory).

So the city/metro is definitely attracting some great talent. It's just a matter of integrating newcomers into the city while also maintaining a place for people of all backgrounds.

DC still retains its soul and character in a good number of neighborhoods even in Northwest contrary to the little sensationalism going on in this thread, but some of them are indeed undergoing a constant assault by the gentrification overkill wave, just like New York, Boston, and San Francisco. It's basically like a new form of colonialism going on. You guys up in Philly better hope it doesn't happen to you either.
