Cool pic.

Assuming the artist is trying for some accuracy I would guess along the Grand Canal where it curves west from a southwest direction. In other words right about I17 and the Grand Canal. Way out of town back then.

Interesting 35mm slide from 1964 currently on ebay. Can any of our resident experts identify this location?

Tough to read the US highway signs, but there is the Hotel Queen Anne by the Shell sign.

Nice 1959 Ford Fairlane by the Old Charter sign on the left side. My first ride (really, from St. Joseph's).

Not Phoenix, Arizona; 'Phoenix' was used by a lot of companies across the United States. This road slopes and the buildings are way larger than what we had in the late 50's.

The tall building in the center doesn't match any 1960s Phoenix skyline pictures. Additionally, the US highway signs appear to read US 24 and US 71... the two intersect in Kansas City. However, the resolution just isn't that good to tell. Likewise for the wanted poster and the billboards.
