Standard Brands - where you went for house paint, matchstick shutters, art supplies. These used to be everywhere, it seemed like, but I guess there were only 4. My dad used to buy canvasses to paint on there, and I always bought the vinyl packs of felt-tip pens to draw with. From May 4, 1974:

Default Valley of the Lost Stores (and Lunch Counters), Part 4

In honor of the last week of Lent: Weird to think of eating in a Walgreen's nowadays, but the ones in the malls often had a lunch counter: 1974

May 3, 1974: Metrocenter was opening its own ice rink. I haven't been in there in years, is it still there?

Default The Valley of the Forgotten Stores, Part 5

May 4, 1974: Yellow Front department stores - a work shirt sized "small" here would fit you like an "XL" you bought anywhere else. If we went to the Skagg's on 32nd Street and Thomas, we would always find time to go down to the Yellow Front in the same strip mall:

The Silver Dollar Drive-in, 7201 S. Central: They don't make movie theaters like that no more. They even stopped the movie for "The Werewolf Break". I think they had real silver dollars imbedded in the snack bar stand (where you bought your popcorn and squeezies) before they were pried up and stolen, one by one.

The Valley Drive-In was at Cave Creek Road and Sweetwater, just on the other side of the houses that were on the west side of where the old Cactus Airport used to be, in the little community of Cactus. It seemed to take forever to get there, back then.

May 3, 1974:

I lived down the street from a Standard Brands, it was truly mo go-to-store for wallpapers, art supplies, paint. I was sad when they closed.

Sheldon graduated with my class of 1955 so if I am 75, he's there or about to be. Didn't know he owned Phoenix City Grille. I should stop in. Only been about 57 years or more since I've seen him.

Default Skaggs

The Skaggs at 35th Ave & Glendale was partnered with Lucky's. Remember Lady Lee?
Skaggs had a real soda fountain just inside the door. Ice cream cones were 10 cents in the early 60's and a nickel for each additional scoop -up to 3.
They also had a decent music rack (albums only). Bought Abbey Road there.
Much cheaper than the rip-off at Bills Records, thats for sure.
Great model kit selection too -Revel. Aurora...
