Straightening up in the garage the other day, I moved a old hoover vac.( it still works BTW) that I've had for decades. I thought back to where and when I bought it.

There used to be a Woolco department store on E. Thomas, around 32nd st. I think it's where a Home Depot is now. Probably bought it in the mid 70's sometime. That old Hoover outlasted the store!

I used to go that store all the time in the 1970s, and dated a girl who was one of the clerks there. It's been through a lot of changes in ownership over the years!

anybody remember Cornforth's on N 7th St?....( I may've asked this before)

it was (one of) the local, hometown appliance stores with excellent service and fair prices....they also did things like fix your car's AC.....I miss places like this

Downtown Phoenix looking to the northwest in 1972, when the Valley Bank, now Chase tower, was still under construction.

35th and Camelback has not changed much, both the gas station and cafe are still there

Quicken tells me that I shopped there as recently as 2002, from the price I'm guessing it was a washer or dryer.

I also found this:

Cornforth

Jenny Pappas, sister of Tommy Pappas. I'm sure many of you know of the family. This photo taken in 1955.

I used to eat in there as a kid. It was a drug store fountain before it became Mary Katherine's I think.

I don't have much good to say about historical Phoenix, though. The city has been way too permissive with growth, afaic. They've spoiled things in more ways than you can shake a stick at. It was once a nice place to live.
