Roosevelt, This is the building many of us are trying to identify or recall. It saw on the exact SE corner of Central and Indian School and was there before Der Wienerschnitzel. It appears to be a deli since I can see "hot pastrami" on the building strip. It has strange criss cross bars, and pointed roof angles. Anyone remember this?... I have a 63 phone book, and I have a 64 phone directory but still have not been able to place a name on this.

As I previously indicated, the building at the SE corner of Indian School and Central in the early '60s was a Nib's restaurant. According to County records, the address of Nib's was 4055 N. Central. I believe the building in the photo is Nib's. I lived in the area at the time and I frequently stopped in there to have a milk shake. There also was a Nib's at 3246 W. Van Buren.

Just checked the 63 phone directory and I found Nib's at the Van Buren address listed, as well as 1602 E. Washington and 638 E. Camelback, but no listing for Central and Indian School. I did see the tax lien for Nib's for 1962 located at the Central/Indian School location. The 64 phone directory shows Nib's at the E. Washington and Camelback location. Nothing listed at all for Der Wienerschnitzel. Thanks, Applegate8 for the name.

This place was closed down because of food poisoning I heard. Or maybe that crazy guy that played to accordion while you were trying to eat.

I'm not sure if anyone posted this link before, but here's a website that has a lot of pictures of the Valley Of The Sun. Of course a lot of us, and in some cases, none of us were not around when some of those pictures were taken. Pictures from the time when I was in my childhood in the 1960s, and growing up in the 1970s, bring back memories.

VINTAGE PHOENIX PICTURES!

The website has a very long scroll bar and a lot of pictures, but you can search it for anything you might want to see pictures of using the search box at the top right of the screen. Example, if you want to see Legend City, just type in the text and it'll list an index with thumbnails of the photos that pertain to what you're search for.

Years ago we went there with some neighbors. I had some type of fish. I could not eat it and it was a whole complete fish and seems like it was expensive too. It was probably very good but I could not eat anything that seemed to be staring back at me.

35th Ave & Camelback around 1967.

Downtown Phoenix looking to the northwest in 1972, when the Valley Bank, now Chase tower, was still under construction.

Default Our Old House

I came across this 1908 article about my Great Grandfathers house. The original address was 1109 North 2nd Street. Just north of Roosevelt.

I had always thought my Grandfather built the place but I was a generation off. I lived there with my parents until 1955-6 when we moved out to the orchards on north 7th street. Being very young the attic, and the cellar were off limits.

We had a sleeping porch in the back yard with canvas curtains that my dad would soak with the hose.

To this day, when I smell wet canvas I think of the sleeping porch.
