My husband most remembers when it wasn't so crowded as it is today. Take this for instance he could walk out of his neighborhood and right into the desert, walk 3 miles into the next neighborhood, etc., etc.

When he first walked off the plane from here to Phoenix the vacuum of hot air that came into the plane scorched his lungs and he had to sit and catch his breath and knowing if he didn't get a drink within the next 5 minutes he was going to wither up in the fetal position on the tarmat and die from dehydration.

In 120 degree weather, you could fry an egg on the sidewak.

But the best part about Pheonix he said was it amazing sunsets while chasing roadrunners into the night.

At Indian School just east of Miller Road and Messenger (south side, near the Social Security Administration) there was a place that I thought was a buffet in the early 70s... was later Garcia's del Este, then was Julio G's, and is now (was there in December) Dos Juevos. It seemed to have the same medieval motif as Royal Fork and Sir George's... Camelot or Round Table comes to mind.

My wife and I used to have dinner at Garcia's del Este on Indian School once a week back in the early 70's. It was then owned by Dick Lipson who happens to be the son-in-law of Julio Garcia who started the original Garcia's at 35th Ave/McDowell with his wife's recipes.

The main cook at that time was nicknamed "Chi-Chi". When he left the food did go down hill until the new cook caught on. The Garcia's restauarants were indeed sold to a corporation that ran them into the ground with nasty managers, poor food, and lousy service. Mr. Lipson then started El Pollo Asado restaurants which didn't catch on in the valley. He then reincarnated the place on Indian school as "Julio G's" and his son ran Julio Too's on Tatum/Cactus, in the strip mall east of PV Mall.

Last I heard, Julio Too was sold, and the Lipsons are out of the Mexican Restaurant business. Too bad, even at its worst, the food plates at original Garcia's restaurants and Julio G's were still fresher, bigger, tastier, and cheaper than 90% of the Mexican Food places in town.

Great pictures of the people and the old Terminal 1 Observation Deck. I wonder if the coin telescopes were still up there. I like the first picture with the Boeing 707 in the background. It was a time when flying was fun and far from the chore it is tody.

With the discussions on the Mexican Food Restaurants I am getting hungry! Actually I bet no one knows of or remembers the Saguaro Cafe in Tolleson. It was off of 91st Avenue, maybe Pierce Street. It was built into an older house and the food was fantastic. We used to see Congressman Stump eating there all the time when he was not in Washington DC. The restaurant had those huge, bright red Coca-Cola porcelain buttons on it. There was even an old Seeburg jukebox for some years. Still miss the food!

The first photo I posted is dated 1973 but the other two are not dated. I'm thinking the second photo is 1976 or 1977. We were flying to Portland OR to visit our father (divorced parents)

I probably could not find Tolleson on a map let alone ever have eaten there When I am in Phoenix, I try to eat as much Mexican food as possible since it is lousy here in Portland. I don't care if it is authentic to Mexico or not, I want the food of my childhood/youth!

I grew up with Sonoran style Mexican food in Phoenix and when I moved to CA well I had to relearn everything. I love going out to Mexican food when I visit Phoenix...it's comforting I think. Sonoran is so different than Baja. And now I live in UT which may be somewhat like Portland quality wise.

Anyone remember when Graham's closed? Used to enjoy their date shakes (summer 1982).

Also, any pics of the Thomas Mall Kiddie Land? It was a big deal when they got their Super Slide in the late 60s.

Great photos/postcards...certainly remember Encanto Kiddy-land...the merry-go-round. Is Luhr's Tower still standing? I met with an attorney there in '73 and it was still alive and well. Wasn't there also a Luhr's Building? Definitely remember Tovrea's...ahhh...the aroma (and I'm not referring to the restaurant!) lol.

You must have quite a collecttion Roosevelt. Thanks for sharing with us.

I remember the super-slide. I enjoyed it as a young teen. What else was there? I don't remember anything else.
