I have a 5 ton air handler in my attic for my heat pump. It's old but still works fine. I'd like to replace it just to make sure it doesn't quit in the summer.

I got a bid from a well know a/c contractor for over 4,000. I think that's high, especially since the equipment itself probably only costs 1,200. Any ideas or experience on this? Thanks.

I'll never understand the logic of replacing something like this that you say is running fine just so you don't have to deal with it in the summer if it just so happens to stop function during hot weather.

That price seems really high, especially compared to what you would pay to replace the heat pump AND the air handler at the same time... and the air handler should be the cheaper side of that combo, IMO.

Given the quality of the imported stuff today, you might be better off with the old one.

Good ideas, folks. I'm going to forgo replacing equipment that is currently functional. A/C contractors in this town are unnecessarily greedy, IMO.

One reason I asked for the replacement quote this time of year is because this is their "slow" season. I guess they don't need my business.

If my A/C poops out, I still have my evap
