I think you're right and it's peculiar how often Phoenix is compared with Los Angeles, but Los Angeles is so huge that it overshadows most other large cities for hundreds of miles.

Phoenix should be compared with other MSAs closer to its size like Boston, Detroit, Atlanta, or Seattle.

Sky Harbor isn't a big international hub but it's a major national hub and it is ranked tenth busiest in the nation, not exactly small potatoes.
