I for one am grateful for people like you driving trucks and believe the pay should be higher for what you are doing. I also think it will be awhile before automation takes over truck driving. However, I believe the new Tesla semi is going to disrupt the truck hauling market in the next few years.

Believe me, I've been in this industry awhile. Over half of trucks still have manual transmissions (and plenty of new trucks with stick shifts are still being bought) and only the mega carriers can afford to regularly replace trucks.
And there's a lot more to this job then just driving down the road

My brother formally drove a tanker truck then a bulk trunk. Now he drives a mass transit bus.
You might be "safe", but will your
wages be safe? The answer is no. When the long-haul drivers are replaced, they will see the writing on the wall and chase after hands-on jobs. You can convince yourself otherwise, but that simply boils down to your favorite class (macroeconomics 101). AI and other automation will be reek havoc for a lot of people. From Radiologists to telemarkets to couriers. It's not if, but when. Position yourself accordingly.

My guess is within 10 years we'll see fleets of automated trucking going across country. As mentioned billions are being spent to make this happen. Yes, there will still be work for those wanting to drive a truck but...wages will fall. It's inevitable.

10 years lol, shows what you guys know about my industry. They can't even perfect the self driving
cars yet, let alone trucks
I would only agree that I wouldn't advise anyone younger than about 35 to get in this industry at this point. Other than that, I disagree
