The Klan are the only "freedom fighters" liberals have hated. The klan were basically fighting against the occupation of their lands following the Civil War, they were no different then the Iraqi or Afghani resistance today. Blacks weren't killed because they were blacks either, they were killed because they were seen as collaborating with the occupiers.
The fact that 50 years ago the Democratic Party was populated by southern racists has nothing to do with today's high moral ground. The Republican Party is the party of racists. Understand TODAY, not last century.

How do democrats feel about the fact that for all of their holy'er than thou rhetoric about racism, the fact is that the crimes against blacks perpetrated by the KKK were all democrats. In 1935 Democrats defeated an Anti-Lynching Bill supported and put forward by Republicans. The 1924 Democrat National Convention in New York was host to one of the largest Klan gatherings in American history. Dubbed the “Klanbake convention”, a minority of delegates attempted to condemn the presence of the Klan but was rebuked by the Klan supporting Democrat Majority. In the late 19th century, Democrat governors and Democrat-controlled state legislatures in the South couldn't pass Jim Crow laws fast enough. Those Democrats created a nearly century-long, legal racial caste system that relegated blacks to the lowest educational, political, economic and social strata. And speaking of the Klan, remember the great Democrat President Woodrow Wilson? After a screening of D.W. Griffith's paean to the Ku Klux Klan, "Birth of a Nation," Wilson, turned-movie critic, said of the film: "It is like writing history with lightning. And my only regret is that it is all so terribly true."
The truth is the south only became majority republican after it was de-segregated.
Democrats of yesterday ≠ Democrats of today. Just as the GOP of yesterday ≠ the GOP of today.

youngherman, what school taught you that? What "occupiers" were the klan killing exactly? Blacks had lived in the south just as long as whites. The only difference is that they were no longer property.
