Nearly 10% of us are unemployed. Can't tax what we don't make.

I would be interested to see how many taxes most of the posters on here pay. We are retirees and pay more than we did when we were making house payments and bringing up our family.

Maybe someone who knows how can post a poll on the subject. It would be good on this thread. Lets see how the age of posters affect the amount of taxes they pay.

I know sales tax probably cannot be included, but it is simple to look on last years tax record and add real estate taxes and see what the bigger taxes are. We pay food tax too. We have a pie chart on our computer that tells us where the money goes and some months charity and taxes take about half of our income.

Here's a good look at effective tax rates, and who's paying what rate on average:

Some posters in this thread are posting incorrect assumptions as to which income groups do or do not pay taxes.

Those child credits are nothing compared to what has to be spent to raise a child.

That's like the mortgage deduction..it's not $1 for $1 so having a big mortgage with a hefty interest portion does not put you ahead of anything..you are still losing.

Folks with kids need a break. Families cannot survive on a single salary these days; most are two income families and they still struggle.

Way too many are not paying their fair share. 47% to be exact.

Puts you far ahead of that person who is renting.

I'm not disputing the fact that its expensive to raise kids and that these credits are needed for many people. However, these credits (especially the child tax credit and mortgage deduction) are why you have people making upwards of $75,000 + paying no federal income taxes.

What is the reason for this? (not trying to be a smarta**, just curious)
Aside from the unemployed .... do you know ANYONE that doesn't pay taxes?
Jesus Key Riest ... how frigging stupid can someone be?

So they have a study ... and some group says half the country aren't paying taxes ..... you'd think I would know at least ONE of them ... but I haven't met a single person that works all year and isn't on the hook for taxes.

How many of these people do you know? Are you one of them? A relative? A friend? Neighbor perhaps?

No ... all of them are people you don't know ... because they don't exist. It's total BS.

Someone admit that they work ... make a decent living and aren't jacked up for a lot of tax?

Anyone? Anyone at all?

Come on, fess up .... at least half of us must be part of that group of free loaders .... the "study" says so!

Wow. No. Read the effective individual tax rate chart (bottom of 1st page), paying particular attention to the 2 lowest income quintiles:

but those children expenses are something YOU took on when you had them.. why do you think you deserve a tax break just because you chose to have kids and others didn't?
see what I'm saying??? look, I am all about using the tax system to help direct society. People who are raising children should recieve some sort of tax break (children are our future).. but for people to sit here and knock ONE group of people for not paying their fair share.. while others clearly don't either by the same definitions.. it's a bit ridiculous.

It's like the old people who like to go and vote down school bond measures.. and their reasoning is "I don't have any kids in school, so I don't want my taxes to go up" well.. others paid taxes for your kids to go to school back in the day.. where do you get off thinking that you shouldn't have to now? taxation is socialistic.. there's no way of escaping it
