You know, I read the same text books and for a long, long, long time I too scoffed at the sobriquet of Lincoln the Great Emancipator, but you know, at the end of the day that's exactly what he wound up being.

If there were any "states rights" involved in this, then yes, the "right" of slave states to continue the practice of slavery is correct. Part of why I don't trust the term "states rights".

I guess if you can remove the "n-word" from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, a work of literature, you can remove "slavery" from the Civil War.

Desert kid !!! ... Precisely !

Indeed the totally worn out and ridiculously over used fixation regarding slavery during the historical period known as the "War of Northern Aggression" has finally at long last just about reached an end in America !

It's about dang time too ! Only a total puddin head would continue to apply the "Blame & Guilt Game" regarding this long, long time ago blip on the American history screen !

It's a shame too ... America to this day has a few folks running around in similar types of old Southern slave clothing and such ! I assume they want to keep the Slavery thing in peoples face and just ah going on for as long as they can!

It appears they have pitifully over played their "Race Card Hand" don't you think ???

May we be thankful there are no real life slaves around today (except for the brain washed pretend they are crew) ! Although there may be some places on this earth today whom would be very happy to allow them to act the part for real !!!

May we ... each and every one of us who are citizens of what is left of America, learn to get along, work together for the common good, and strive mightly to re-establish a formidable America for the long term !!!

What say you to that mates ?

Thanks / Old Sgt. Lamar

The right of the states to govern themselves without federal interference.

Do we really need a Secretary of Education? He or she isn't doing any of YOU any good.

The Civil War was fought over the desire of the Southern states to continue the practice of slavery, not the Secretary of Education.

The Civil War was fought over the federal government's interference with the affairs of the states.

The federal government should be weak, and the states strong. That's how the country was set up, so that the states could handle their own affairs.

Now the feds have "nose trouble" and they need to get it knocked off their face.

You mean interference with the slave states' desire to continue the practice of slavery.

Interesting Article, sure to be accused of being written by someone unknowledgeble of the Civil War.

Five myths about why the South seceded
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/01/07/AR2011010703178.html1 (broken link).

The South seceded over states' rights.
Confederate states did claim the right to secede, but no state claimed to be seceding for that right. In fact, Confederates opposed states' rights -- that is, the right of Northern states not to support slavery.
