It would seem for many European Americans that have obtained some measure of assimilation into American society as also taken on the cultural value of discrimination, prejudice and racism toward non-White Americans. Is that the price for being "Accepted" into the American cultural mainstream?
Nope. White Europeans are WAY racist. When they immigrate over here, they bring their racism WITH them.
Considering that the United States has been a multicultural nation for 235 years of its 235 year history, and that we are at this point the oldest Constitutional democracy on the planet, the largest economy and most powerful military... I'd offer that it has been a crushing success.

The bottomline to this whole thread, and others like it, is that racism is natural. Tribalism in ingrained in our DNA. It has taken, and will take, a LOT more work to overcome something that's naturally ingrained in most humans. It's not going to be easy, it's going to take much patience and cognizant practicing of tolerance every step of the way.
People have been brainwashed in America to believe that tolerance and compassion for others not like you is NATURAL and you're a "bad" person to feel otherwise. You're not bad, racism is a drive as natural as a sex drive (tho prob not as strong ). You can work to overcome it, but it takes WORK.

I never said things have not changed. I said that it has been a failure THUS FAR. Will we all be able to overcome the racism that's naturally ingrained in us? No one knows the answer to that.

but, if you're arguing that full integration can't be achieved, then you must agree that multiculturalism has failed. you know, since it can "never" fully be achieved.
Regarding your example, then you are saying modern medicine is a failure. Because you are saying that multiculturalism is a failure. That's what you are arguing. If your simile about the common cold is followed through, then modern medicine is a failure THUS FAR. Because it doesn't succeed at one thing. But hey, ignore all the successes if that suits your agenda!

And your reasoning that if full integration cannot be achieved that multiculturalism is a failure is faulty. MULTI-culturalism is an acknowledgement by its very definition of differences within a society, and has nothing to do with eliminating those differences. YOU are defining integration ("achieved when we're all one color/one race") as the elimination of differences between people. Multi-culturalism is not about eliminating differences, it's about finding ways to make the differences not be divisive in a society. The differences exist, but strategies are used to reduce friction between the different cultural groups.

OH, bullhockey! Racism is not ingrained. Racism is learned. The human urge to form connections, to affiliate, to participate in a society is natural and ingrained. And when we form connections, we also identify people who don't share those same connections. But there is nothing that dictates that "race" or any other characteristic has to be the deciding factor in how we choose to affiliate ourselves. We could just as easily choose to affiliate based on right- or left-handedness. And down with the ambidextrous! Because "race" can be determined on the basis of appearance, it's a short-cut to determining if a stranger is an "us" or a "them", but there is nothing ingrained in humans that forces us to make such choices. We make the choices because the people who nurture us, the subculture we grow up in, the culture we live in, and the society in general teach us what choices are acceptable within those constructs. And many individuals make choices that aren't acceptable to those constructs, which totally debunks your argument that racism is ingrained in humans.
